Did you reverse more than 10 metres? Sounds like the hubs are locked into 4wd.this will work if you have auto hubs.but sometimes you have to turn the hub manually if they don't disengage.if you have gone some time or distance in 4wd

56 means zero to folks not in UK, so use real years.
ok google shows late 2006, now all can read and know.
PART time 4WD.

is it in 4wd?, do you know how to tell?
jack up 1 tire at at time and feel it? per below.
just turn the front prop shaft by hand, 1 tire front off ground
if you can turn it, its not in 4WD, (10min work) i can do this in 2.
trolley jack in hand.

now if not in 4wd, then the switch on top of the transfer case
is bad, (fibbing,) i drive for 100k more miles like that, i dont need
a lamp telling me its in 4wd, never, i can feel the PT system wind up.
ever wind it up? , by driving on (not in traffic or in turns)
in 4wd on dry pavement. feel that? feel that ODD steering effect
do so dead slow on dry pavement , if unsure.

btw 4wd means , transfer case in 4H or 4L and both front hubs
are locked, , if not ,it's not in 4wd. sorry, not.

best advice, forget the lamp (for now)
and learn to check all parts of the 4wd system.

my car (4th 4wd suzuki) 2004 GV grand vitara. (91-04 range)
it has a pump that locks the front axle and no silly end hubs. 99+
i dont have a 2006 parts catalog to see UK version.
so in my ignorance, (non usa) i go to wiki and behold it works more like my vitara (no buttons). and not like pre 98 Jimny.s at all.
quout:
Jimny features a part-time 4WD system. On its dashboard, there are three buttons - 2WD, 4WD and 4WD-L. The 2WD is default when it runs as RWD. When 4WD is pressed, the front wheels are also engaged as drive with high gears. The 4WD-L engages front wheels as well as low ratio gears. Being a part-time 4WD, there is no center differential or viscous coupling. The Jimny should not be driven on normal road surface in 4WD mode. In Japan the "Sierra" name was revived in January 2002, when 1.3 liter Jimnys began to be sold as the "Jimny Sierra" rather than as the "Jimny Wide".
The Jimny's vacuum-locking hubs allow the vehicle to be shifted from 2WD to 4WD while travelling at up to 100 km/h (62 mph). Shifting to low range requires the vehicle to be stopped, but there is no need to exit the vehicle. Newer Jimnys feature electronic push-button selectable four-wheel drive, which requires the vehicle to be stopped with the clutch depressed and transmission in neutral to select low range.

end quote:

my guess is you have Push button.
so get the manual on your car, its called an FSM. we dont have this car here so can not look it up , at alldata.com and see.
when you push that button is it still a vacuum front end lock>/?

did you lose the operators guide already? it will tell you how to
dis-engage the 4wd properly , I promise)

no matter what , my jack up and turn front prop shaft , still works

get it serviced, or buy the FSM and read the 4wd pages.
learn how yours works, and then see if the lamp is right or wrong.
on some the switch is very hard to reach. just a warning....
good luck.

Jimny suzuki not engaging, seems neutral always. What seems to be the problem?

welcome to usa forum, we dont have Jimny here.
but car is kind simular to a vitara.
no year stated, so that makes real accurate answers impossible.
no transmission stated. or engine size

is it a stick or auto trans?
is car 2wd or 4wd?

is the lever stuck in nutural.?
or is the lever working right but the transmission fails in all gears and reverse.
mine has stick and 5 speeds, and reverse so has 6 gears to try.
If an automatic? trans. check the levels. per the operators guide do not guess.
and change its filter, if never done.
if automatic, make sure the lever moves its cable and the other end of cable is still attached to the trans lever. on the box.
they both move same amount, (cable drive does that)
if not the cable is bad, or bits there.

The selector drive mtor mounted on the transfer case had alot of problems with water getting into the circuit board and also the mtoro drive getting stuck. At the dealership I have replaced hundreds of these over the years.

My Suzuki jimny will not go into four wheel drive, the four wheel drive light is on on the dash,it is a 2004 thanks.

Will the leaver not move? Try reversing a little, the forward. This might let it slip in place. Sometimes you get transmission wind up, causing the 4wd drive not to enguage.
If it won't come back out try the forward and reverse thing again.
I don't understand the light being on and your still not getting 4WD!

I engage the four wheel drive in my 2005 Ford F-150 when we had a snow storm this week. Now when switching out of fourwheel drive the transmission wines until you switch it back to fourwheel drive...

the four wheel drive uses vacuum hub locks. there is a vacuum solenoid on the passenger firewall in front of the battery box. sounds like you need a updated solenoid and possibly one or both hub locks. what happens is the old style solenoid vent allows water to get in and the hub locks freeze or stop working because of the water. the new style has a cover over the vent to prevent water from getting in.
