What is required to change the plug wires on the engine's right bank on a 1996 Buick Roadmaster?

I removed the alternator, but it appears that more accessories will have to be removed to gain access for the spark plug wires to be routed to the distributor from each of the spark plugs.

THIS VEHICLE HAS OPTIC SPARK DIST. THE PLUG WIRES RUN ALONG A CHANNEL BEHIND THE ALT AND A/C COMPRESSOR. THE WIRES MUST BE PROPERLY INSTALLED IN THE CHANNELS OR CHAFFING AND PINCHING WILL RESULT. VERY GOOD SYSTEM, JUST A LITTLE HARD TO REPLACE.

SOURCE: Replacing spark plug wires on 1995 Buick Riviera

You need to drain some coolant. Loosen and disconnect water lines by the firewall- the ones in the way of your wire change. u need to get a diagram of the firing order of the engine so that those wires are correctly connected to the coil packs.

SOURCE: How to remove/replace spark plug wire routing clip

Typically, spark wires are encased in a flexible plastic tube which is secured in usually 2 places with special clips. The tubing material gets brittle over time and cracks /breaks easily so patience and being careful are the key. After you remove the tube from its mounting points, you will notice that the tube has a split over its entire length. Carefully spread the split open at on end then pull (one wire at a time through the split. then reverse the process with the new wires..... unfortunately this is even more difficult and requires even more patience... good luck....

1996 Buick roadmaster start on hot sunny days but

use a water dispersant to clean out the distributor cap, HT leads and around the coil terminals. Check that there is no carbon tracks in the cap and that the plug leads are not touching each other . clean around the rubber covers at the plugs as any moisture there will short the HT spark directly to earth

Do I have to remove the air conditioner compressor on a 1996 buick roadmaster so I can install a air conditioner bypass pulley for serpentine belt?

Yes, the bypass pulley fits into the same area that the compressor will have to be removed from.

If it's for fuel efficiency, some people just remove the wiring/plug from the compressor and tape it to the side so that it won't engage, if the clutch isn't damaged it's the same as using a bypass pulley.

Also, the clutch can be replaced and used instead of the bypass pulley, in the event it is bad, retaining the ability to go back to an A/C system should you ever desire.

Good luck !

Buick Roadmaster radiator fan

hi Russ, it sounds like the temperature switch is bad. It is located under the hood, front engine area, driver side, end of intake manifold, mounted in the block. U should be able to test it w/ an ohmeter as follows: disconnect wiring (check for loose, corroded, etc as that could be the problem) remove temp. switch, place in an old pot w/ water on stove, w/ temp below 99 degrees, connect ohmeter to terminals, reading should be zero. Heat water to above 99 degrees, check , should read infinity. If it fails this test, it's time to replace it. Good luck, let me know how u make out Curt from Connecticut.
