With the car running the battery voltage should be around 13.8 to 14.5 volts. If it's a lot higher then the regulator in the alternator is not working properly. You can take the alternator out and have tested at an Auto Electric Rebuild shop usually for free, or some shops will test it in your car.
It is most probably the regulator that is built into the alternator. A simple test that is free can be preformed by your local Walmart with an auto shop. Same goes for any auto zone store.
