How long will a vehicle speed sensor keep acting up before it completely gives up?

2004 Ford Focus ZTW wagon 2 litre manual. The speedometer is wonky, the radio goes up and down in volume and the car shutters when ever it feels like it. I live in Guelph Ontario Canada so it is cold -15C degrees I don't want to get stranded on the highway. I travel approximately 25 km one way to work on a highway.

The speed sensor is located on the side of transmission toward the rear of the trans, is simple too replace, if you buy then new one and jack and support the vehicle look under Neath and it simple unplugs then use a crescent wrench take tork off and unscrew it. there will be little trans fluid (1tea spoon ) that will come out and that's normal on a scale of one to ten it rates 2. so not hard.

SOURCE: ford focus wiring

same thing happened to us.  My wife came home and said the rear brake lights were stuck on so I assumed it was the brake switch...not so. Took car for a ride and noticed rear wiper did not work and when I hit the brake the rear hatched opened and door locks blew out.  I started by looking at the wires in the gromet above the hatch and found almost all the wires were bare.  Therefore power was jumping  the bare wires and traveling back down the third break light and to the rear brake lights and visa versa.. a very dangerous situation.  The best that I can tell is the wires are so short in length that they pull and chafe every time you open and close the hatch...very poor design...   Note: we bought our vehicle brand new and some of the wires had electrical tape on them....seems mickey moused.

2001 Ford Focus. What is the speed sensor's function?

If you are talking about the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) , it relays to the ECM (Electronic Control Module) what the vehicle speed is so that it can manage fuel mixture and transmission shift points as well as ignition timing. On some vehicles it also is used for the ABS system and for the cruise control and to make speedometer readings.

MY 2002 FORD FOCUS WAGON ZTW HEATER STOPPED WORKING . COULS IT BE THE FUSE OR WILL I NEED TO REPLACE THE HEATER AT WHAT COST?

Yes it could be a fuse. You need a test light or volt meter to test.
A fuse goes bad because of an overload of amps, or a short. (A bad fan motor can short out). Check all fuses. (See the owners manual for locations) If all is good, you need to see if you get voltage to the fan motor. If the fuse is blown, or bad, replace it and try it again, if it blows again, unplug the heater fan and then try another fuse. If it doesn't go bad, the motor may be bad. Cost will depend on what you can do yourself.
