Its definately the key gone bad if the spare is working I am mercedes trained tech you need to order a new key
Testimonial: "Thank you so much, I will do that."
I'm sure you replaced the key battery! ??
Nothing to do with a key chip
The chip is a magnetic signal to a module behind
the key cylinder or in the dash
Once the key is recognized, it sends a signal to a dash module
& on to the starter relay, so you can start the car
You appear to have a mechanical key problem
Make sure your brake switch works also
Shifter switch as well
Now we all need to move away from this question & have MB Tech answer it We all tried to guess & failed it would appear

SOURCE: i need a diagram on
here is the diagram:--
On the 2006 R350, a 17 mm bolt just under the belt going to the tension pulley will release the belt tension when turned counterclockwise. Removal of the belt was easy after using a 17 mm deep socket wrench similar to a spark plug socket. I made turning the bolt very easy by slipping a 4' pipe over the socket wrench handle. It is advisable to put the new belt LAST on the idler pulley that contacts the belt only on the smooth side.
You do not need todisturb theButton Torx bolt in the center of the tension pully.
This will help. Thanks please keep
updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Did you try jacking up the car at the front then wiggle the steering as you turn the key? Did you try a spare key? Spray inside the mechanism with WD40. Try putting the key in at different depths and turning.
The lock cylinder is a replace only item.
Reset your Mercedes-Benz key by placing the key in the ignition of your vehicle while the vehicle is turned off. Do not turn on the vehicle. Press a finger on the "lock" button of your key fob while the key is in the Mercedes' ignition.
Pull the key out of the ignition while continuing to hold the "lock" button down. Continue to hold the "lock" button for the duration of the key resetting process
Use another finger to push down on the "unlock" button five consecutive times. Keep holding down the "lock" button.
Release the "lock" button. This is the end of the resetting process for your Mercedes-Benz. Use your key fob to ensure it is properly working
