I have a 2008 Hyundai Accent. My timing belt broke going down the interstate, and I had that fixed, which included a new head, thermostat and sensor, water pump, and new drive belts. Now I keep getting a p0128 code. The shop has since put in three more thermostats and two more sensors. They also said that I needed to take the car to the dealer to get the computer updated. I have done all of that and now the check engine light has come on again with the same code. What could be causing this to happen? I am getting very frustrated having to deal with this over and over again.
Here is what I found on P0128 code:
- Leaking or stuck open thermostat
- Low engine coolant level
- Insufficient warm up time
- Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
- Engine coolant temperature sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine coolant temperature sensor circuit poor electrical connection
When is the code detected?
The engine coolant temperature does not reach to specified temperature even though the engine has run long enough.
P0128 Hyundai Description
Coolant thermostat (coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature). Indicates that the thermostat monitor has not achieved the required engine operating temperature within a specified amount of time after starting the engine.
I WOULD TAKE IT TO A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP, ONE THAT HAS YOUNG MECHANICS THAT UNDERSTAND TROUBLESHOOTING CODES AND SEARCHING YOUR CAR COMPUTER FOR SOFT AND HARD CODES THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THIS CODE. YOUR COMPUTER SOMETIMES KEEPS A HISTORY OF CODES.

I would go to auto zone and get a diagram and the timing belt and do it yourself and the water pump (no it does not have to be changed everytime the timing belt is changed but if the car has over 60,000miles then it is best to change them both) it is not that hard especially if the car is not out of time just make sure you disconnect the negative side of the battery

YOUR WATER PUMP GASKET IS LEAKING.ITS NOT SEALING.IF YOU DID USE GASKET SEALANT ON WATER PUMP GASKET IT WILL LEAK.ALSO YOU NEED TO PUT HALF ANTIFREEZE AND HALF WATER.BECAUSE WATER WILL BOIL OR EVAPORATE.WHEN ENGINE TEMP GET ABOVE 212.YOU NEED ANTIFREEZE TO RAISE THE BOILING POINT.SO YOUR ENGINE WILL NOT OVER HEAT.EVERY TIME ENGINE OVER HEAT IT DAMAGING THE TRANSMISSION.I WOULD FIX IT.QUICKLY.CHECK TO SEE IF WATER PUMP LEAKING.YOU MIGHT HAVE TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE GASKET AGAIN.

if jump time that should be it timing marks and the tensioner are to lined up an also install new tensioner and recommend water pump if driven by the timing belt. if it has bent valves cause you jump time usually the car won't trun over at all.

Look for air bleeds, sounds like the coolant has air pockets. And ALWAYS check coolent level with heater set to full heat, or water valves would be closed, and blocking coolant...
