I have a 1995 cirrus. Just bought it and was overheating. Fixed problem and now a new one. Tach nor instrument panel work and trans only works in reverse, neutral, and stays in first. Any suggestions in first step to resolve transmission issue?

try to test the fuse b) check wiring c) check resistance and voltage. the pin 18 in I.circuite will have 12Vdc positive. the pin 8 is tach ground and test it. God bless you
Cirrus,Stratus and Breeze, all had trouble with there printed circuit dashes,Did you notice if you lost the odometer and tach,or odometer and speedometer first, and then it got progressively worst.Or every thing worked one day and nothing while you were driving.
Since you just bought the car, I thought that you might not be aware of the instrument lighting control. I apologize if you know this: The dial on the dashboard to the left of the instrument panel controls the brightness of the instrument panel lights. Turn the dial to adjust the brightness. To reduce glare at night, the fuel and temperature gauges dim when you turn on the parking lights or headlights. You then adjust their brightness when you adjust the instrument panel brightness. Turn the dial up as far as it will go to return the fuel and temperature gauges to their daytime brightness.
Hope it's that simple.
Yes, but you need a VAS or VAG-COM diagnosis scantool. Yours instrument cluster must be encoded according yours car, with this VAS or VAG-COM tool, because the car have an electronic immobilizer! You need also key's programming! You must know the old and the new (second-hand) instrument cluster pin codes! After that the instrument cluster coding adjusts the various combination of the on board computer according to engine type, cylinder count and country version!
THE PINION FACTOR OR TIRE SIZE,MUST BE PROGRAMMED WITH A SCAN TOOL IF YOU INSTALLED A NEW TCM..IF TRANS IS SLIPPING..THERE SHOULD BE A FAULT CODE IN TCM
I had this problem along with my fuel gauge dropping to empty and back up to actual amount and tach worked sometime and didn't other times. I ended up replacing the Engine Control Unit (near positive battery terminal on firewall. If you read the codes out and they all have something to do with low voltage, this will solve the problem.
