I have a 03 trailblazer I replaced the power steering pump today and I still have intermittent power steering. It was doing the same thing before in replaced it. Possible bad rack and pinion but is there a inline valve I don't see or possibly a blockage in the lines or cooler?

No inline valves on these. Replace the rack or rebuild it.

Is it too terrible to rebuild?

  • Randy Ohler Nov 13, 2014

NO. You will have to purchase a few tools to do it. Snap ring pliers and a couple of picks/awls. Even if you buy a set of the tools, you will save money over buying a rebuilt rack. I get the kits at autozone for around $30. It comes with a diagram, but not instructions. There are nylons seals in it that have to be stretched and then reseated in the proper grooves. If you think your up to it, Email me at [email protected]. I will guide you thru it. Most vehicles, I pull them, rebuild them and have them running in 4 hours.

I believe it is a power steering pump. My car does the same thing and the power steering fluid was low. We completely filled the power steering and a week later it was low again.

Power steering went out on a 2002 trailblazer. the serpentine belt was slipping off so I replaced the serpentine belt and pulley tensioner, still out. Pulled the steering pump, pulley shaft was broken....

Have you checked your tie rods? Possibility one is either bent or broken, I've seen it before on TB's. That pulley shaft is a common problem to break, especially when cold out. PS pumps/pulley shafts and tie rods will snap if doing donuts in the snow with the steering wheel cranked, or off-roading. The PS is completely mechanical, no fuses or relays.

Where do I find the bleeders for my power steering on a 03 chevy trailblazer?

There is no bleeder.  You have to turn the wheel from left to right without hitting the ends of the steering rack too hard and this will filter out any air if the cap is off the steering pump.  Will take some time for the whining noise to reduce as the air is mixed in with the fluid.
If you want to bleed or swap fluids you have to remove the low-pressure hose (one with a simple clamp directly off the pump) and run a hose from there into a pop-bottle 2litre plastic one.  When full put cap on and remove from area.  Put new fluid in as the old stuff squirts out. Should be able to flush the system with 1 or 2 liters of power steering fluid. Someone will have to turn the wheels at this time.  Try not to overfill. Be prepared for a bit of a mess and watch out for the drive pulleys and belts.
Good luck.

Power steering keeps going stiff all the time

There are 2 things that cause power steering to go stiff. The power steering pump itself either from failure or "lack of fluid" and the rack and pinion assy under the car.
Most of the time the failure is the power steering pump itself. The teflon rollers fail inside the pump and it either stops providing an output pressure or it seizes up. You can loosen the power steering pump belt then try to rotate the pump by hand. It should move by hand. If it feels like it is intermittently locking up as you rotate, it the teflon rollers have failed and the pump will need to be replaced.

When i turn or when im driving my steering feels different like its heavy. there s also a drip from one of the hoses. the steering isnt real hard to move but when i go to turn its alittle stiff

You could have a problem with your power steering, but some simple things to check is to first see if your power steering pump reservoir is full of fluid. If it is low or empty, your steering will suffer, and worse would be the power steering pump will fail if you run it dry too long. If it is low, fill the reservoir, and wipe down the hoses and pump before you start the vehicle, so you can find out a general area of where the leak is coming from.

the first thing that i have heard causes this is bad gas. you can get stuff at the parts store to get the water out of your gas. May need to siphon it out and then fill with new gas. The next thing that I would check would be that the wiring in the steering column is not shorting out somewhere or maybe going bad (such as corrosion.)
