From the tear of the car I guess you have the 4-speed automatic. That transmission is not one of the most reliable ones...it has an internal wiring harness with relays attached to it, that are in control of what gear to select, based on input from an internal speed sensor, engine speed sensor and wheel speed sensor. There is also an issue with VW claiming that the transmission "is filled for life", which is absolute B.S. You have to change the transmission fluid and the filter at least every 60K or you will face an expensive rebuild. Have your mechanic scan the computer for fault codes related to the transmission and change the fluid and filter when the problem got fixed.

hi if its just second to thrid then the clutch is slipping on thrid gear look at the boxes oil level is important but look at the colour is it red and tranperant as this is ok if its brown its a sign of the clutches slipping i would try a stall test on thrid gear first and if its ok second gear [manually] see is the engine stalls at the correct rpm if you thinkabout it imagine you are in thrid gear in a manuual box and suddenly drop into second it would be hard shifting it could also be a faulty thrid gear solenoid yates210456

You'll have to get it checked. Its going into limp mode. When this happens you have third gear and reverse. Its to get you somewhere to get it fixed. You can damage the tranny worse driving a lot while its like that

SOURCE: Where is transmission solenoid located on 1995 vw jetta !!!!

need to know if a 1995 jetta vr6 automatic transmission has to be set by a computer when re installing. also do you need a computer when adding trans fluid. what type of trans fluid do i put in an automatic jetta vr6 trans.
This trans slips and does not go int gear. It goes forward in all gears including when in neutral and reverse.

The secondary aux air pump needs to be removed in order to access the coil pack secured to the block. Remember the bolt for the coil needs to be torqued down to 7ft lb.

I currently have the same problem, and looking at replacing the transmission wire harness. I'm hoping this will cure my problem. My volkswagon mechanic thinks so anyways.

I have a 2001 jetta 1.8t automatic. the asr light is on and car shifts hard from 1-2-3 and 3-2-1 gear. if I clear the light the car shifts fine until light comes back on. wha could be the problem?

You may have the problem with the ignition coils those VW/Audi 1.8T motors have. They would fail prematurely, but VW only replaced them as they went out, despite knowing the other three would soon fail too. If you are getting a combination of asr, esp, and cel, it’s usually a tell tale sign of the ignition coils failing. I would swap out oem spark plugs and oem VW ignition coils first, clear codes and then see. Those motors also had issues with oil consumption, so keep on top of that. They hold barely 4 quarts of oil in a high compression engine, so synthetic oil 5W-40 or 0W-40, I’m hoping you used full synthetic it’s whole life and changed it at least every 5,000 miles. Good luck and I hope this helps!

1998 vw jetta turns over but won't start check engine light on

The coil pack on these are bad about being defective. You need to check to see if you have power coming from your coil pack. If you do not try changing it out, this produces 60k +/- volts that goes through your ignition wires, to your spark plugs and ignites the gas on combustion with the piston. If it's not giving off a spark, thenyou're not getting power to fire off the engine.

You may have a bad coil pack - try moving two of them around and see if the misfire follows the coil pack or stays at the same cylinder. If it follows the coil pack, get a new one. If it stays in the same cylinder, inspect your spark plug wires and make sure the plug is gapped correctly.
