The check engine light will come on when the management computer detects a fault that can affect exhaust emissions. When that happens the computer switches to a get you home programme and records a fault code.
A code read is required to discover the fault which should then be verified by independent tests before wasting money chasing down blind alleys.
Could be low fuel pressure or several other things. If the check engine light is on you should get it checked out, most any auto parts store can scan the computer for free in hopes of selling you some parts. If the warning light is not on, I would look at the fuel system again.
You have a bad cam sesnor in the distributor- for certain. Rich Porter on ebay has the best reman for $200. Guaranteed fix. 99 was famous for this, runs cold for 15 mintues then acts up and quits, tach usually jumps around too.
I recently had a similar problem. I got my car scanned and needed a new catalytic converter. If its already starting to spit and sputter, you probably have 3-6 months to get this done. Mine plugged up one day, and just flat out would not drive anymore. This cost of this repair was about (i recommend changing the spark plugs and wires also) $675....pretty costly. could get a lot more expensive the longer u let it go. Does your jetta run cold, in cold temp? (between 25-40 degrees) if so the thermostat probably took out the converter.
i have gone on the internet and looked up the code however there was 3 2 different meanings to this one code you need to check all oil levels as it is a warning for oil pressure as well as the throttle body check the transmission motor oil power steering etc if these are all fine then there is some trouble with the throttle body this is what i would pin it to. it should be OK to drive home just be very careful keep it slow and try to stick to one speed if it is the throttle body you will need a new one any way if you have cruse control use it as it will keep the motor steady avoid any harsh breaking or execrating as this makes tension KEEP IT STEADY DRIVE SLOW ABD YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET HOME DON'T GO OVER 80KPH SO ABOUT 71MHP. don't overtake don't apply power and dont use the aircon if you can help it as this all adds presure to the throttle body if the throttle body breaks it will not damage your motor as i said you need to get it fixed any way so you cna take the chance the worst that will happen is you will not make it home and your car wont run till a new throttle body is put on we have a 2005 holden rodeo at work same as isuzu and we have had this problem it was the throttle body it is ine thing that is commen with in these cars hope this helps good luck getting home safley ricko
Firstly, never run or drive a vehicle when the engine light is FLASHING. Very bad things may happen.
Are there any other symptoms? Does it do it al the time? Have you checked with your dealer?
