Did it leak before you replaced the pump?

Testimonial: "Yes. As it sat in the driveway, it began with a slow leak and then started streaming. I thought the water pump and changed it. The current leak seems to be the same as it was before changing the pump."

unless you have a garage or access to a floor jack and stands or a lift, dont try this at home, the right side of the engine will have to be stripped away to get to the plug

Has the thermostat been changed lately? did the fluid leakage start about that time? check the thermostat housing and the heater hoses. i would also check that the correct gasket was used on the water pump. it is not unheard of to get the wrong gasket with the water pump. they may look right but a small difference can make all the difference. is it the correct water pump? are all the bolts on the water pump tightened properly?

  • lesterc322 Nov 06, 2014

:It is dry around the thermostat. Hoses and connections are all fine. The leak is under the water pump. I am going to take it apart again. I am hoping with the pulley and belt off I will be able to see where it is coming from.

SOURCE: coolant leak at the front of the engine

The water pump is located along the left side of the engine underneath the plastic covers. You coolant leak is most likely a radiator hose.

SOURCE: Leaking coolant

freeze plugs are supposed to pop out if the coolant starts to freeze in order to keep the block from cracking. the holes the plungs sit in are als used to cast the engine. see a mechanic and tell him you need a freeze plug replaced and show him which one it is, it won't cost more than $35. SOURCE: 1997 cavalier 2.2 auto, coolant leaking a steady stream, it's running to the left of the main hose that goes into the engine on the top. Is there a gasket on the block other than the head gasket??

Are you referring to the top radiator hose that goes into the thermostat housing? If so then yes you have an o-ring seal on the bottom of the thermostat housing.

Over heating

there is a bleed valve where the thermostat housing is located. try getting the engine up to normal operating temp and with coolant handy, open the valve to let out the trapped air. dothis til a steady stream of fluid comes out. use caution as the fluid coming out will be very hot! make sure the resrvoir is full and see if it overheats then..

How do I bleed the air out of the coolant on a 2000 Monte Carlo LS 3.4L?

Look for a bleeder screw at the highest point of the coolant system, it is usually located on the thermostat housing. Once located open screw with engine off and cool, and pour coolant into the coolant resevoir/ radiator until steady stream of coolant starts to come out of bleeder screw.

1996 chevy cavelier 2.2L engine overheating

you need to bleed the coolant through the radiator tube. there is a bold on the bottom steel line on the driver side of the motor back it out but not all the way and then fill your radiator until antifreeze comes out of the hole on that line. make sure it is a steady stream before tighten it up
