This will depend on the make of vehicle and the type of rear end. Some have a seal in the axle housing that runs on the bearing retainer and others have the seal on the outside of the bearing which means that the bearing has to be pressed of to replace the seal. Others have the seal in the hub and others have the seal running on the face of the axle. To get exact details you will have to specify the vehicle .
