I have a 1997 chevy silverado 2wd it has the 5.7 vortec it has 311,688 miles on it. I pulled the codes and it tells me bank one and bank two are running lean explans whats wrong with my truck i just wanna know how to fix it

yes, weak mixture gives excessive pinging, or predetonation as its called. Get it on a diagnostic machine and see whats wrong.

Oxygen sensor is screwed into the down pipe on the exhaust. It can be tested with the right gear. But I think you need to check all sensors because you say it runs OK basically, just very weak.

That's a lot of miles! Get the oxygen sensor checked, I'm wondering if its going south and leaning out the mixture too much. I think you need a good tech to go through the sensors that control mixture. Inlet air temp, water temp, CO, exhaust temp etc.

SOURCE: Pulled code p0420 on 99 chevy astro, 2wd, v6

from what i am finding the code means o2 sensors. they recommend replacing them and if this does not work than replacing the cat converter

The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

causes

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
possible soloutions

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 code include:
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter
One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

What are the color codes for the iat sensor on a 2008 chevy vortec 5.3

The color codes are tan and a tan/black. There are 2 wires that go into the mass air flow sensor, fyi dont buy or put a resistor in this spot, it tells your engine its getting colder air than it actually is and doesnt help anything. If you buy it you will decide to return it, but then you just lost on shipping cost, and a resistor is about a dime in cost.

2007 Chevy Silverado check engine light came on. Only 30k miles.

the check engine light is on to tell u that one or more of about 200 possible problems has occured in the electronic engine controls or emissions controls and monitor system, this kind of leaves guessing out due to the number of poss problems so you must take the truck in and have the system tested for the troulbe code that is now stored in memory
