Cylinder head gaskets have an in built adhesive that glues the head to the block. For this to work it is imperative that both the head and block surfaces are clean. Use an oil remover ( turpentine) . Make sure there is no oil or water in the stud holes as this will ooze out when the studs are being tightened destroying the adhesive properties of the gasket.

No, and don't use any sealer or lubricant the gaskets are silicone, clean and wipe down the heads mounting surface with brake klean or carb cleaner. I hope this helps. Take care.

Is there a sealant for a blown head gasket or cracked head?

How/why do you think you have a blown gasket/cracked head??
....If you have a blown head gasket/cracked head you need to get it fixed ASAP.. Check your oil for cross contamination...( a light cream colored oil indicates water/antifreeze mixed with the oil).this WILL cause major damage if you continue to run the engine..(WATER is NOT a good engine lubricant!!!!) There are several "sealants" or radiator stop leak products... BUT ..cleaning these out of a coolant system is a NOT FUN!!.. Sorry.. trying to "patch" this will lead to more $$$$$ down the road!!

Water in the oil

Radiator coolant in the engine oil is normally an indication of a failed cylinder head gasket or a crack in the cylinder head or both.

Running the engine in an overheated condition will cause head gasket failure and often a crack in the cylinder head.

The problem you have is coolant is escaping into the engine's lubrication passages via the failed head gasket or head crack and contaminating the engine oil. If not fixed you will cause further damage to the engine as oil contaminated with radiator coolant cannot adequately lubricate the engine.

Running a leak down test on each cylinder will confirm the leak. In this case you are going to need to have the cylinder head removed and thoroughly checked for cracks and any warpage as well as a new cylinder head gasket fitted. The condition the engine block surface will also need to be checked.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Exhaust manifold Alternator Water crossover Intake manifold Valve cover Timing cover Secondary camshaft drive chain Power steering return hose retaining bolt from the cylinder head 3 M6 external drive bolts from the front portion of the cylinder head 10 M11 internal drive cylinder head bolts Cylinder head and gasket.
  5. Clean the head mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Lubricate the bolts with engine oil prior to installation.
  2. Torque the M11 bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), plus an additional 70 degrees
    2. Step 2: Turn an additional 60 degrees
    3. Step 3: Turn an additional 60 degrees (total 190 degrees)

  3. Torque the M6 bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  4. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering return hose retaining bolt to the cylinder head and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) Secondary camshaft drive chain Timing cover Valve cover Intake manifold Water crossover Exhaust manifold Negative battery cable
  5. Change the oil and filter.
  6. Fill the cooling system.

Engine coolant level drops on Mercedes C180 2001 model

Loss of coolant is serious because if you allow your engine to overheat you can cause very expensive engine damage - thousands of dollars of damage (not hundreds).

The items that need looking at are:

- Radiator cap is old and faulty. This can allow coolant to escape and needs to be replaced every 4 or 5 years (sometimes sooner) with the correct spec cap - not any old product picked up at some auto store.

- External leak - you need to check all flexible coolant hoses and connections for leaks as well as around the water pump to ensure the WP gasket is not leaking

- Internal leak
The most common is a blown cylinder head gasket which can allow coolant to escape and to get into the cylinders and into the lubrication system. If getting into the cylinders you will see white smoke coming from the exhaust . You need to check the engine oil for coolant contamination as a coolant can escape into the lubrication system via a damaged head gasket. You also need to check the coolant for signs of oil escaping under pressure via the blown head gasket into the cooling system.

An internal leak can also be caused by a cracked cylinder head but if you have this condition are blown head gasket will have probably occurred around the same time.

1. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the threads in the block. Make sure the bolts turn freely in the block.

2. Install a new head gasket on the engine block. Make sure the camshaft sprocket timing marks are still aligned, as set during the removal procedure. Install the cylinder head.

3. Lubricate the bolt threads and seat surfaces with clean engine oil and install them. Torque the bolts in 2-3 steps to 56-60 ft. lbs. (75-81 Nm) in the proper sequence.

I need a print out of how i can change out a head gasket on a 1995 mercury cougar

Removal
  1. Drain engine cooling system.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) including air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) .
  1. Loosen drive belt tensioner (6B209). Remove drive belts (8620) .
  1. If LH cylinder head (6049) is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove oil filler cap (6766) .
    1. Remove power steering pump front mounting bracket retaining bolts.
    1. Remove generator (GEN) (10346) and belt idler pulley (8678).
    1. Remove power steering pump/generator bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected, place pump/bracket assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid from leaking out.
  1. If RH cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove drive belts .
    1. If equipped with A/C, remove mounting bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected and position A/C compressor (19703) aside.
    1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) .
  1. Remove upper intake manifold (9424) .
  1. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  1. Remove fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
  1. Remove lower intake manifold as outlined.
  1. Remove exhaust manifolds (9430) as outlined.
  1. Loosen rocker arm seat retaining bolts enough to allow rocker arm (6564) to be lifted off the push rod (6565) and rotate to one side.
  1. Remove push rods . Identify position of each push rod . Push rods should be installed in their original position during assembly.
  1. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts and discard.
  1. Remove cylinder heads .
  1. Remove and discard old head gaskets (6051) .
Installation
  1. NOTE: Lightly oil all bolts and stud bolt threads before installation except those specifying special sealant.
    Clean cylinder head, intake manifold , valve cover (6582) and head gasket surfaces. If cylinder head was removed for head gasket replacement, check flatness and sealing areas for scratches of cylinder head and cylinder block gasket surfaces. Refer to Section 03-00 for procedure.
  2. Position new head gaskets onto cylinder block (6010) using cylinder head to block dowels (6A008) for alignment.

  8. For each valve, rotate crankshaft (6303) until valve tappet (6500) rests on the heel (base circle) of the camshaft lobe, before tightening rocker arm seat retaining bolts to 7-15 Nm (5-11 lb-ft) maximum.
  9. Lubricate all rocker arms with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M99C80-A. Final-tighten the rocker arm seat bolts to 30-40 Nm (22-30 lb-ft). For final tightening, camshaft (6250) may be in any position.
  10. Install exhaust manifolds as outlined.
  11. Install lower intake manifold as outlined.
  12. Install fuel injection supply manifold .
  13. Position valve cover and new valve cover gasket (6584) on cylinder head and install retaining bolts. Note location of ignition wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 Nm (7-9 lb-ft).
  14. Install upper intake manifold .Install spark plugs (12405) , if removed.
  15. Connect ignition wires to the spark plugs .
  16. If LH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install oil filler cap.
    1. Install generator/power steering pump mounting bracket.
    1. Install generator .
    1. Install main accessory drive belt tensioner .
    1. Install power steering pump (3A674) .
    1. Install power steering pump support bracket.If RH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install positive crankcase ventilation valve .
    1. If equipped with A/C, install A/C compressor mounting brackets (2882) and A/C compressor .
  17. Install drive belt and tighten to specification.
  18. Connect battery ground cable .
  19. Install air cleaner outlet tube.

I have coolant leaking from in between where the head flanges up to the engine block, I can't even get the motor to turn over.

u have a blown head gasket here and a cylinder that is full of coolant, this locks the engine up.

93 2wd st/wagon ,head gaket going,,Is it ok to drive the car 500ks by tightning the head down ,just to bring the car back home for gasket replacement.

It isn't recommended, but you should be able to do it. First of all since you said the head gasket is going I assume the engine runs half way decent. Also tightening the head may help a little but not much. Are you sure the head gasket is blown? Because you could also have a cracked cylinder head or engine block. If coolant is getting into the oil, the oil will lose its ability to lubricate the engine. If coolant is getting into the oil I would recommend taking along with you everything you need to do an oil change. And do an oil change every 100ks (I'm assuming kilometers). I won't need to change the oil filter, just the oil. You would want to bring the proper wrench for the drain plug, an oil pan, a funnel, a container to hold used oil, and of coarse the new oil. This may seem like a headache but if you don't and the engine seizes up half way home due to lack of lubrication, you can imagine what kind of headache that will be. Also if the head gasket is "going", it might go completely during the trip and the engine wont be able run, especially if its blown between two adjacent cylinders which is where they usually blow.
