My 1994 Mazda Protege gear shift is stuck in the park position. The button won't engage. What is the problem

More than likely the synchronizers are going out,they allow you to move from gear to gear without damaging transmission.

Check the shift cable that goes between the shifter and the transmission. If it's damaged internally it will not move properly and the condition you stated will be a symptom. Easiest way to check it is to disconnect the transmission end of cable and see if it moves freely. If not, replace it.

sound's like the throw out bearing wen't this it what move's the clutch away from the flywheel when u push in the clutch peday if this fai's the tranny could be fine but u will have to remove the tanny to replace the throw out bearing and clutch asembaly

I have the same problem. HOLD button doesn't seem to work but it's stuck 'on'.... did you find out what was wrong?
