2001 dodge caravan. Changed engine. Ran a few days loss power engine ran poorly. Changed Iacocca. Ran about 20 miles black smoke and engine ran poorly again . Pulled exhaust off punched out cat replaced exhaust. Won't start now. Ran fine without exhaust hooked up.
A lot of vehicles the baffles drop down in rear muffler.I normaly drop that section and test before punching holes in catalytic convertor. When you rev engine does it sound restricted at rear tailpipe if it does drop rear muffler down not a big job. Then try still the same you have problem up front convertor still blocked
I believe these are all valid solutions. The catalytic converter is blocked up. I would check the plenum as i believe its sucking in oil thru the intake that fouling out the catalytic converter. A stuck value is a plausible explanation of it running poorly and loss of power.
Defective catalytic convertor. It may be plugged up.Make sure ALL the exhaust line from intake manifold(at engine block) to final exhaust pipe are not clogged up.You have reverse exhaust pressure going back towards engine manifold.
SOURCE: I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L,
The plenum problem should not affect compression tests. It allows oil to get sucked into the intake and will cause carbon buildup, plug fouling, and pinging. If you have zero compression on a cylinder, it is usually a valve problem. Even a burned piston will make some compression, unless it has a big hole in the middle.
Sorry, but if your compression results are to be trusted (and it seems they are), then you have to tear a head off to find the problem, or at least get a borescope in it.
