Is it using it or loosing it? Have you a leak? If not then what is the usage level. If its high mileage engine then then a litre per 1000 miles isn't unusual but Mazda's are good normally so if its ever had the engine oil dangerously low then some wear could have happened that's blighted a normally good engine. Piston rings are usually the first to suffer. Then the oil consumption goes up. A compression test won't always guide you, because its the oil control rings that suffer.
