If you're car has been running fine, then suddenly won't start, the cause is frequently that the fuel pump cutoff has been tripped. Open your trunk, and look for a label for a fuel pump cutoff switch. Locate the switch, press it in, and see if the engine will start.

Alternator replaced. car fine until recently

You car is fuel injected. You should not need to pump the gas pedal to get it to start. If your check engine light is on you need to take it to a shop and have the codes read so you can see what the problem is and repair the problem. A change of fuel filter might help. Water in your diesal fuel may also be a source of your problem. A diesal motor works off of combustion and heat, there really isnt an ignition system in the car except for the glow plugs which heat things up prior to ignition. If it is taking 34 times to start the vehicle you may also have a glow plug issue. If these are not working properly you will never get this vehicle to start.

I really think you have a glow plug problem.

While driving my 2003 Jetta TDI last night accelerating up a hill my battery light came on and the car died. All other lights work, glow plug light still comes on. Engine turns over but does not fire. ...

Did you check the battery? Alternator? The 2003 Jetta TDI's are FAMOUS for breaking the alternator pulley right off the shaft. Is your serpentine belt hanging?
You could have a bad battery, broken alternator, broken serpentine belt, or bad alternator among a few other things. If your belt is hanging either the belt broke or more commonly, the alternator puller broke off the shaft.
It happens all the time with the 2003's

2001beetle tdi hard starting

The stuff that you replaced could have an effect on the starting of the vehicle. Take the diesel pump and injectors for calibration this should solve the problem.
