My 2001 Yukon XL will tap when idling and the check engine oil pressure light comes on until I give it some gas then it goes away and tapping stops. What is this problem?

Without hearing it, I can only guess. Collapsed lifter or loose connecting rod bearing.

High miles? Maintenance not done on schedule? That would do it.

SOURCE: 2002 Yukon XL Denali Problem: When

Most sensors will trigger the check engine light, however the TPS(throttle position sensor) or EGR Valve(exhuast gas recirculation valve) could be potential causes. Does this problem only occur at idle? Is the idle normal in park? Let me know and I can try to assit further.

Hope this helps

Denalis are famous for clogged fuel filters. Change the fuel filter first and see what happens, Get the code for the check engine light. It could be you have a clogged EGR ports. Remove EGR valve and clean out the ports, replace with new gasket and see what happens. Advise of results.

Yukon 5.3 low idle, low oil pressure

The low oil pressure will not affect the engine rpm. You need to find the low engine idle problem and correct it first. Could be a simple throttle body cleaning. This would clean out the idle control valve which could be the problem. Most service centers will be able to do that.

Your valves r tapping could be low on oil. I had a slight tap in one of my cars the engine is still going strong thousands of miles later

The check engine light means there is a trouble code stored in the car's computer. The first thing is to get this read out, to home in on the problem. Autozone will do this for free I believe.

It is not uncommon for the oil light to flicker at idle when hot, as long as the pressure rises OK at revs. Get an oil pressure reading done by temporarily replacing the pressure sender unit with a pressure gauge, and you can then tell if there is a problem in that area.

My oil comes on when I down shift to come to a stop but goes off when foot on the gas. I also have a lifter making a noise 2001 ford escortzx2

check and change your oil, the light comes on when braking due to the sensor detecting a low amount, and goes off again when hitting the gas because the oil flows back towards the sensor,, check for the correct amount of oil in the system,, changing the oil and filter could clear the tapping lifter , if not a adjustment could repair it

Okay What it means is that the oil in your car is either low in level or the oil pressure at low revolutions is low. I highly recommend you to stop driving the car when this happen because you can internally damage the engine with a low oil or a low pressure of oil. Check the oil level first..make sure level is fine and oil looks good. Black and burned oil will give you a low oil pressure as well. If it happen that your car need a oil change. Make sure you get it done and see if the problem goes away. Very rarely oils pressure sensor goes bad but if oil is new and level is fine you can take the oil pressure sensor and connect a tester for a oil pressure. If this is not under the manufacturer specifications.. oil pump is worn out and you have to replace it for a new one.
Good luck and don't forget to rte me. Thanks

Tapping noise on start up

Thats a good guess. Check your oil pressure if possible. You may need a new oil pump. The tapping could be pistons or valves when cold.
The oil light could be bad sender. They are not necessarily related. Don't replace anything until you determine the cause. ie: check oil pressure.

Stop every hour or so and check your coolant. Also check your oil frequently and make sure it's not milky. I personally wouldn't want to get that far away from home in it until I know it is not going to leave me stranded.
