SOURCE: Mitsubishi Eclipse Harmonic Balancer 3.0L Removal

There is a panel inside the wheel well that you can take off that gives you perfect access to the harmonic balancer. A special tool is required. i had my dad make one because he has access to whatever he needs at the factory. but you can get them at the dealer. i have no clue how much they cost. I can't see any way of doing it without the special tool. after you get the tool its pretty simple to get off. it takes alot of force to break the bolt loose though. i used the handle off my jack as a cheater bar. hope this helps...

SOURCE: remove rear axles 99 montero sport

this is like every other rear axle they are all built close to the same, you need to pull the wheels, remove the pumkin housing in the center of the axle, inside you will find 2 ring gears with a shaft that goes from top to bottom, on one end there is a cross bolt remove it, then the shaft will slide out and the gears can be removed, not push one axle at a time twords the middle, you will find a horseshoe clip on the end

repeat on the other side, and there you go axles out...

How do I remove the rear axle

The rear axle shaft?? Or the entire axle? I'm going to go with the axle shaft. Secure the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts. Jack it up. Take the wheel and tire off. Remove the caliper and/or bracket. Remove the rotor. Place a pan under the rear differential cover. Remove the rear differential cover. Spin the axle shaft to reveal the center pin. Locate the 8mm-5/16 bolt that holds the center pin in place. Remove that bolt. Slide the center pin out, BUT DON'T TURN THE AXLE SHAFTS WHILE ITS OUT! Push the axle shaft in from the outer portion (where the wheel goes). A "C" clip will fall out inside of the differential. Pull the axle shaft out. Slide the center pin back in. Replace the 8mm-5/16 locking bolt and spin it a few times to keep everything in place.
