I have a 89 ford clubwagon i charged the a/c and compressor comes on and cycles on and off kind of quick only on for maybe 1 min then goes off air is not cold like it should be has 4 pounds of freon in it.van has aux cooling system please help
To correctly repair and diag, you should have gauges to monitor the system, if the system was totally empty, possible moisture in system, it needs to be evacuated for at least 15 mins with a DUAL A/C system.....also check the cycling switch located at the dryer it could be starting to go bad.....But still with out gauges your guessing at what could be wrong....GL....

You say that i holds a charge, and the compressore turns, but does the comprressor cycle on and off, as this is indicating that there is enough charge, and once there is low pressure detected, it turns the compressor on, and when it reaches a high pressure, the compressor cycles off.
Lastly, when engine running and AC on, if you feel the 2 pipes going in to the firewall, one should be hot, the other should be cold ???...is this happening ???
Hi, if the Compressor is running and you can see and hear the clutch on the front of it engage, the 30 amp fuse is good and not blown. Have someone in the drivers seat, in park, brake set turn the a/c on after the engine is already running. You stand there and watch while they turn it to full cooling. You should see and it the part on front of the compressor click and come on and stay on. If it does not come on, this is an indication that there is no freon in the unit. The pulley will turn with the belt, but the plate in front has to come on for it to pump. If it goes on and off cycles like that, its low on charge and is cycling on the low pressure switch. Check these things I have said and keep me posted. If it does cycle on and off, you can pick up a can of R-134A with hose and gauge at auto store and charge through the low side. If its out, it will take about 2-12oz. cans. Let me know how it goes. Please be kind when rating if I have been of help to you. I wish you the best! Sincerely, Shastalaker7 A/C & Heating Contractor
mcdevito75 here, Almost all Freon contains some compressor oill, pick up a recharge kit from your local parts store. If you a/c system has been down for a while you could add a can of oil it comes in one size, and usually added before ar during the freon charge.
how quickly does the compressor cycle on and off? also, the condenser should be hot, not cold. it is similar to a radiator, its job is to take the heat off the refrigerant to cool it down. if the comp. cycling quickly, its usually just a low charge on refrigerant. have it recharged.
HI, i recommend checking the following areas for faults.
1. A/C compressor- check to see if the unit is Low On Refrigerant, or Restricted. 2. A/C Clutch- A/C Compressor Clutch May not be engaging as it should. inspect the clutch action by monitoring it during the run cycle.
3. A/C Expansion Valve - You could have a Faulty A/C Expansion Valve, Restricted valve or, a Bad Capillary Tube.
Check the above areas thoroughly. you will find the issue in one or all the areas above.
***Use caution when preforming these checks. you don't want to have an accident.
