SOURCE: car will start but wont idle

Hi Andre,

Sounds like timing is off or the plug wires are sequences wrong.

Has anything recently been done to the vehicle? (e.g. tune up, timing, plugs).

What other symptoms if any does it have?

When it warms up, does it run smoother?

If so, hows the power?

Any other details, would help us to help you.

In the mean time, check the plugs to see if they're fouled. Check the plug wires are seated properly and in the correct order. Providing the Engine size would help if you need the firing sequence.

Best regards
Mike

1985 5.0 MERCURY COUGAR. Idles great, but when I try to go somewhere, it cuts out after a block or 2.

Have you done a fuel pump pressure test? Is there rubber parts roaming around near the jets inside the carburettor? Gotta check those too.

Golf 2, 1985 idles a very low revs ( 1000) even when chokes is fully engaged

Make sure your cam timing is correct, then maybe your idle jet is blocked, then also after all that then check your ignition timing.

Vw golf stalls at lights and roundabouts

Check out the rubber/metal flange that joins the carburettor to its manifold. Wait while the engine is cold. Then check if the carburettor moves . Do this by taking hold of the carburettor and moving it a little side to side. The rubber mounts are known to perish after a time and this can cause air to be sucked in through the cracked flange rubber and in turn causing the engine to drop revs. The flanges are a replacement part and not too expensive so its a relativley easy fix if this is the problem.
GOOD LUCK
