Since you didn't provide any vehicle info, here is a easy way to get your info.

Look under the hood and around the engine compartment for a label that shows how the belts are routed. This is on most cars that have serpentine belts. OR, Go to the Autozone website, register, and then get the vehicle specific repair information from them for free. OR, make sure to list your specific Make, Model, Engine size & Year when asking specific questions and it will be much easier for someone to provide the correct answer.

There are also manuals available online in PDF, or published manuals at almost any parts store. If you're going to be doing repairs to your expensive car, you should know the most about each repair BEFORE you attempt to do it. These manuals provide tips & resource info that makes doing the work much easier.

Good luck!

Belt routing diagram

Hi Robert:
The make and model might help one of us to google it and find an answer, but if you have the correct belt, replacement is a straightforward matter.
- Vee belts fit in the vee and are tightened by loosening the alternator bolts and moving the alternator.
- Serpentine belts have the inside (ridges) fit into the drive and driven pulleys, and the outside fits against idler pulleys and the tension pulley. The easiest way to install that I have found is to use a 3/8 tortion bar with a "cheater" extension on the handle. (mine is a piece of square aluminum tubing about 2 ft long. The 3/8 square drive fits in a hole in the face of the pulley carrier. Move the tensioner pulley so that it is in the fully slack position, and while holding it there, put the serpentine belt in place. Then let the tensioner release to tighten up the belt.

How to change serpentine belt on 2006 buick lacrosse

Start by drawing a diagram of the belt routing. Serpentine belts normaly have 1 spring loaded tensioner (1 pully will have a nut or 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive hole) That will be the tensioner. get spanner or ratchet to fit & lever the tensioner away from the belt. Remove belt. fit new belt to most pullys except the easiest to get to, lever the tenioner back & fit the belt to the last pully, Check the belt is on all pullys properly & your done
