What makes you think it has bands?
no symptoms posted,
nor transmission option, nor engine.
looks like it has a 4speed automatic. in USA. (no diesel that year, in usa) so is gas engine. and 1 tranny for auto.
is this the 42RLE tranny>?
or 45RLE? or 545RFE

is the transmission SLIPPING , DO say what?
there are like 40 symptoms for any A/T box.
here is the exploded drawing of a 42RLE
no bands there, like in the olden days, of hyramatics.

they sell the parts, so looking drawings there, is super easy

SOURCE: jeep liberty transmission problem

IT COULD BE SOLENOID PACK OR THE GOVERNOR AND TRANSDUCER OR LOW FLUID OR THE MOST COMMON REPAIR SPEEDS SENSORS INPUT/OUTPUT. ALL OF THESE CONTROLS THE SHIFTING. START WITH THE SENSORS FIRST, VERY COMMON.

SOURCE: Gas Mileage on a 2008 Jeep Liberty

I also own a 2008 Jeep liberty and get close to 200 miles per half tank I know I can get close to 380 miles and my gas light comes on.

1 other thing to consider is does it have 4 wheel drive and if so what version?

I have a part time 4 wheel drive so I only engage it when I am in bad weather snow, ice, ect. or if I go off road. My system is not designed to be in 4 wheel mode on dry roads.

If you have a full time 4 wheel or all wheel drive model that will definitely eat up more gas as the engine has to work more to pull and push all 4 wheels all the time.

Not a total solution but I hope it helps give more insight!

Best of luck,

Joe

Adjusting bands is too old school for that model. You have to overhaul it and put in new clutch packs.

Can you adjust tthe bands on a 2004 jeep liberty transmission 42 RLE automatic

why would you think it has bands?
old cars, &relics,. had all bands, and the maker got rid of them 1 by
1 , down to a low band (most 1 band cars now , have auto adjusters)

they did this to make tranny more narrow, and to make them stronger
to get rid of having to muck with them over and over, service steps just not really needed. (a top goal , now and by EPA) no muck no leaking to ground water, bla bla bla./
the 30/32RH had bands,

my guess is you are reading books for old cars and thinking this applies to now.???
the 42RLE has clutch packs, that are behind a PISTON that
is 100% auto adjustable.

why not post symptoms, theses transmissions are complex
and is shifted by and electronic brain
did you scan the PCM to see if there are TRANNY DTC errors yet.
that be first after checking fuses.

Jeep stalls or runs ruff when shifted to reverse tranny was rebuilt not sure if bands were adjusted properly

Hello. Your engine might be burning transmission fluid when shifted into reverse. If bands were out of adjustment, it just wouldn't move...or very slowly.

Where are bands located on 1996 jeep cherokee transmission and can they be tightened?

THE BANDS ARE LOCATED INSIDE YOUR TRANSMISSION AND THE CAN BE ADJUSTED. HOWEVER THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE WITH THE TRANSMISSION OUT OF THIS VEHICLE. GOOD LUCK.
