The brake light switch is on top of brake pedal arm. Check your bulbs, and connections to the rear lights (unplug harnesses and clean the connectors as well as bulb(s) etc... )

Also, it (shouldn't) be the brake light switch if you can shift out of park. Good luck.

SOURCE: 2004 Landrover Freelander stop/reverse light fuse keeps blowing

I had a persistent problem of hill light warning and TCS warning lights coming on for no apparent reason. There is a wire connection between the stop light switch and the control unit to let the system know when brakes are being applied. Changing the stop light switch cured it. The replaced switch was certainly sticking and the new one was of a different design. Replaced it myself as switch comes with a wiring loom. Need to get on your back under the steering wheel! Not very expensive. My car 2001 TD4

SOURCE: stuck in park, Land Rover Discovery

Had the same problem with my 03 Disco. Went through the usual, checking the fuses, etc. I went ahead and replaced my break light switch on the brake pedal. $15.00 fix, or I thought so; still had the problem! Took it in for repairs and found out it was fuses after all... To get the parking lock to disengage you need to pull of the housing, which is tough and then press in the locking pin at the base of the shift lever to shift out of park. you can do it with the engine running and it will drive just fine until you put it into park again. Check your brake lights if there is a problem. Could be a sign of the brake switch failure. In my case the lights were out, but a cheap trailer rental did the damage. The short in the trailer blew some fuses and it was a problem that cost me $60.00 at the repair shop....

SOURCE: My Land Rover Discovery's brake lights aren't

First, check the brake switch. This is mounted in a bracket on the pedal assembly. See if a wire has come off the contact, if ok, then join the 2 wires together and with the ignition contact on, see if the brake lamps work. This will show you if the switch is faulty. If not, get a circuit tester and see if you have power to the wire that goes to the brake switch, if not , then re check the fuses, if they are ok, then you need to go to an auto electrician , as the problem is in the electrical installation. If you do have power and with the 2 wires joined together the brake lamps are still not working, gain access to the rear lamps and with a circuit tester, check to see if there is power to the lamps connector also check at the bulb holder contacts. you should be able to see where you have lost the power.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: The main brake lights don't work on my 2002

That is NORMAL -- just found out myself. ONLY- the center light and the lower (bumper) lights are your brake lights. The main lights are ONLY used for running lights.... Got to luv it!

I have a 2002 Land Rover Freelander that is stuck in Park. The stop light switch has been replaced with an autozone part, but it still does not work. The break lights are also not working.

This might help you. Otherwise, just find a mechanic you trust and have him or her check the brake light bulbs. It could also be fuse problems. Check the diagram for your lights or check your manual. http://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/5166/land-rover/freelander/freelander-transmission-problems

I tow an enclosed trailer with my 2002 freelander and the brake lights don't work on the trailer. I have the proper connector which works fine for the turn signals, the hazard flashers and the overall...

If the Brake light filaments in the globes are OK then you could have a bad connection some where in the brake light circuit from where the trailer connector cable is tapped into the vehicle wiring loom.
Start by disconnecting the trailer connector and checking on the vehicle socket for an indication that voltage is present by using a multimeter or test lamp while the brake pedal is pressed. If not OK, then the fault is either where the brake light wire is screwed into the socket or the connection in the vehicle wiring loom.
If OK then reconnect trailer plug and after removing cover, check the trailer plug where the brake light wire is screwed into it. If OK, then check where wire is connected at trailer lamps. If not OK, then there is a broken wire in the trailer cable.

2002 GMC sierra brake lights not working. Reverse and blinkers ARE working!

Check fuses first. If thats OK, could be a problem with the brake switch (down by the pedal) or the wiring.

brake light switch fault, above the brake pedal, may have two wires or four depending on variation of model, not expensive to replace.
