You need a mechanic with a high level scan tool to check the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Live Data. It is probably ABS Sensor related, but should never leave you with no brakes..
as long as the engine codes match they will fit.

Lady friend has a 2006 escape hybrid; she just had problem of overheat; same as I had with my 2007; she went to Ford Dealer; they said it was a recall issue; fixed it for free. I paid a "Christian Brothers"
garage to fix mine; had no idea about a recall; (and bought mine from a Ford Dealer;!) but was not near a Ford Dealer at the time; both problems were the same and related to the hybrid system.
The service writer thinks that is a Service engine soon warning it is not, I think it is some kind of needed maintence warning. Read your owners manual under "Understanding Your Instrument Panel" section for more information.
theres a problem with the emission system, maybe a bad fuel cap or a leak in the system, you would need to have the computer scanned for codes, these codes will give you an idea of whats not working, auto zone car parts will scan your codes for free, start with that.
