a vacum modulator does not prevent a car from shifting into gear. Usually when a car fails to move, internal parts of the transmission break and sometimes shatter prevent the clutch pack from functioning. The purpose of a vacum modulator is to allow the transmission to shift smoothly from one gear to the next, but now on allot of cars these days transmissions are solely controlled by the computer. If you transmission does have a vacum modulator then your will find a steel vacum line from the engine going to your transmission with short pieces of hose connecting the lines together.

Does that transmission have external shift linkage? Sounds like a linkage broke or the neutral gate is way off.

check the fluid in the slave cyclinder if its low it can cause this

In your car the computer might control the transmission's shifting. If you are having the same problem with a new tranny, then I would say the problem could either be with a sensor on the transmission, or there could be a problem with the computer.

Your shift linkage has come undone. Jack the car up and climb underneath. You shift linkage is either com undone from the trans or you shift stabelize bad has come undone at the shift arm.
