I recently went to start my truck and the idle was very erratic and after checking for any visible vacuum leaks and finding none tried to drive it home. The engine lacked power and would rev very high

I have replaced the tranny fluid and filter and also the transmission modulator. This did not help and the idle is still erratic. I also replaced the distributor cap and rotor as well as the EGR valve and air filter. I tried to time the engine by disconnecting the spout connector but this made the timing light not function at all. It works fine with the spout connector connected but not with it disconnected. So how am i supposed to deal with the engine idle to even be able to ***** the tranny issue? Please help!

Unless you have the codes read to find which sensors are not working then you will be just wasting money chasing your tail. Have the codes read and that will indicate where the problem/s lie.

I would check the oil pressure of the engine. The reason is the timing chain tensioners are run with oil pressrue. I think your timing chain tensioners are leaking down when engine is getting to operating tempature . The oil is thinning down as warms up , as it should to lubercate . I would check compression and do a cylinder leak down test on all the cylinders. Then if the compression is good and the cylinder leak down is good. I would change all the timing components, ( chain, timing gears, timing chain tensioners )

Good Luck , I hope this helps.

have you done a reaaly good tune up on the car? I would suggest replaceing the idle air control valve first, the a really good set of plugs and wires. I would also reccomend that you check the fuel regulator to be certain it is getting the required vacum to operate the release valve and let the fuel flow back into the tank.

SOURCE: ford truck f250 v8 motor idles high

the vacuum leak that causes this high idle is the gasket at the bottom of the upper intake manifold runners, they **** in, done 100's. to confirm this just spray carb cleaner at inside and outside base, when u hit the leak you will hear it. see photo.

SOURCE: Ford EEC-IV Ignition Problem

if you have a set of noid lights check for injector pulse if you do not have pulse and no spark you have a bad pick up (hall effect sensor) inside the distributor this also would account for your prior problem with your timing because this pick- up (hall effect sensor) if it starts to short internally can effect ignition timing and missfires and also for the voltage changes

2002 Chevy express 4.3 engine stalling out and runs rich.

It seems like the problem lies with the engine management system, rather than the brakes. Given that you've already replaced the MAF, MAP, and TPS sensors, here are some other things to check:

1. Vacuum leaks: Inspect all vacuum lines for cracks or damage that may be causing a leak. A vacuum leak can cause erratic idling, poor acceleration, and stalling.

2. Idle air control (IAC) valve: The IAC valve controls the engine's idle speed. A malfunctioning IAC valve can cause the engine to stall during idling. Try cleaning the IAC valve with carburetor cleaner and see if the issue is resolved.

Golf 2, 1985 idles a very low revs ( 1000) even when chokes is fully engaged

Make sure your cam timing is correct, then maybe your idle jet is blocked, then also after all that then check your ignition timing.

I'd replace dist. cap and rotor button. There might also be a crankshaft position sensor near the crank. Might be bad. Also, check the MAP sensor and vacuum to it. don-ohio (:^)

I had an 04 blazer. There is an undocumented problem with leaks in the intake manifold. The original gasked was low quality. I would expect that you have a vacuum leak in the intake manafold. My problem was a coolant leak. Replacing the manifold gasked fixed it.
If not this, make sure you do not have any creaks or opening in the air hoses that fed the throttle body.

2001 v6 4.0 ranger erratic idling at stop

That's where I would start. Get a spray bottle with water in it and a few drops of dish soap just to make it sudsy. Start the truck and spray around all of the vacuum lines, intake manifold, etc. If the idle goes up, that's your leak. Good luck
