It could be an emmissions problem. Sometimes even the gas cap being loose can cause a code. Make sure to tighten the cap when done refuelling...you should hear repetitive clicks when its tight. Other components related to code p0172 are o2 sensor(bank 1) and catalytic converters. Hope this helps!

When you fill your gas tank do not over fill . Stop when the nozzle clicks off the first time, don't top it off. Your over filling and the extra full is going into the vapor canister . So when the engine computer turns on the purge solenoid instead of fuel vapors it is get liquid fuel ! P0172 is a rich code . It only happens after a refill !

SOURCE: P0336 Code

The code P0336 is crank shaft sensor performance code. The sensor could be faulty and not picking up a good signal. The after erasing the code, the problem still exists ,so it is then a pending code and when you shut the car off and restart it the code reappears.Just another idea here ,if you have not had a tune-up recently(plugs, wires, airfilter, etc.)you could get unwanted codes and your engine will not perform as it should. This could cause poor gas mileage as well.John.

SOURCE: check engine light on,running rough code P0172

When I see all these codes i instantly think of two things. Vacuum leak especially intake manifold gaskets and Mass air flow sensors. Spray the engine with carb cleaner when its running and see if you get it to rev up,run rough or run different. Next unplug the MAF and drive the car, see if it runs normal.

dear friend-filling the tank has nothing to do with the engine light.in order to cancel this light, disconnect the battery and leave for a while.reconnect battery and check light,it should be of,if the same happen again take vehicle to a dealership for a diagnostic report.

1999 mercury cougar v-6

Generally this happens because these codes were reset at a dealership etc. These problems should have been corrected before the codes were reset (reputable dealer). A common reason that these codes come on is because of excess hydrocarbon emmissions with a misfire. If this was a temporary event, the light would reset. Since it continues, another likely reason is the oxygen sensor in the exhaust system has failed.

Take it to an auto parts store and have them read the trouble codes. Most do it for free. But DON'T follow the advice they give! They alway recommend replacing any sensor that's listed in the code. Since this happened right after a fill up, I'm guessing it's most likely an EVAP code. Read this post on what that means. Then post the code here and we can help.

P0172 Fault

P0172 is a trouble code that is set when the ECU senses that there may be too much gasoline present in the air-fuel mixture of the engine. A proper air-fuel ratio of about 14.7:1 is vital to obtain maximum engine power and fuel economy

The fuel mixture grows rich and eventually, the code sets. An "over reporting" Mass Air Flow Sensor can be a common cause of a code P0172 and P0175. Essentially, this means that the Air Flow Sensor is telling the computer that much more air is entering the engine than actually is.
