I had a coolant leak on my 1998 3.1. The leak came from the timing cover where the water pump impeller is housed. There was a pin-hole in the water pump impeller housing. The hole was caused by corrosion on the inside of the impeller housing part of the timing cover.
If you wish to get rid of the defective part, the easiest way to do it is to pay someone. It's a lot of work and could cost more than the car is worth.
Or you can do what I did and cover the leak with JB Weld epoxy on the outside of the impeller housing. (For this, I used the JB Weld putty.)
It is probably only necessary to cover the leak from the outside, but as an extra precaution I coated the inside of the impeller cavity as well. (For this, I used original JB Weld.)
The impeller housing has been leak-free for over a year, but an inspection of the internal repair revealed that some of the epoxy had come off. Those pieces could plug the radiator, so I am not recommending that you take the risk of applying epoxy to the inside.
Good luck.
Replace the water pump this is the sign its bearings are going out and they start leaking out a weep hole in the back
If the coolant is coming out of a machined hole, then it could be the weep hole. If the coolant is leaking out of a pinhole in the timing cover casting, then it is not a weep hole. The water pumps I have seen for the 3.1 have the weep hole located in the pump casting below the shaft. But who knows what configuration you might have.

SOURCE: coolant leaking from behind timing belt cover.
Hi, This will be more likely to be the water pump.
hope this helps
George.

Your intake manifold gasket has to be replaced. This a common problem with Chevy Malibus from 1997 to 2005
SOURCE: Are there any water pump bolts behind the timing
Yes,but only if you want to remove the complete water pump including the thermostat housing. If you only want to replace the water pump(front section only) the part that leaks water from the small hole in the housing behind the pulley you only have to remove the 10mm bolts running in a circle!!

You could have a leaking water pump gasket. Did you put sealant on it when you replaced it? were ALL surfaces totally clean?
SOURCE: Cold engine knock after timing belt and water pump replaced
Hi, this could be because the cam timing is a notch or 2 out. The fact that it quiets down when the engine heats up is because the timing is retarded as the engine reaches operating temperature. You will have to look at the cam timing and make sure that they have done it correctly. If that is fine it might be that they have dropped something, like a bolt or nut into the valve cover when it was removed.
