Cable attachment was not adjusted properly so that the park position allows the steering wheel to lock and let the key turn off. Now the lock mechanism is jammed and must be removed from the coulmn.

SOURCE: key locked in ignition... can't get it out. HELP!

I had this problem. To get your key out a pencil or thin bolt 2-3" long is needed. Look under the steering wheel and you will see a hole (not a screw hole). Press up with the pencil and you will depress a lever and you can turn and remove your key. You can keep doing this forever, if you like, but the problem is the neutral Park switch which is located under the console where the shifter is. When you get the cover off, which takes a little patience, you will see a switch up towards the top near the Park position. There is a broken or shorted wire that connects to that switch. I think in mine and maybe yours the wire was installed in a bad spot and got pinched, eventually it breaks or wears thru. How it works is when you put it in park it touches thaat switch which turn on a tiny sloenoid in your key mechanism which depress that lever you pushed with you pencil, and you can then turn off the car and remove your key! Fix the broken wire and you are back in business.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand prix wont start; unable to remove key

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.

Good luck.

SOURCE: Aztek won't start, key locked in ignition, service engine light on

It is the security chips in the keys. Has this car been wrecked? Was this car made in Mexico? GM had the bright Idea of creating a security system that would do exactly this, I know on cars made in Mexico (like the HHR) You can reset the power and get the key back out, but vehicle will have to be reprogrammed with the master key. This involves turning the key from off to run position without ever going past run (i.e. start position) leave key in this position for 30 minutes. Turn key back to off for 30 seconds then back to run for 30 minutes. repeat this step three times. the last time, after 3rd 30 minute period, turn key off for 30 seconds and then try to crank. Please note this only works if the original master key is being used. You can then reprogram the second key following a similar sequence, only master key that is working has to be inserted to let alarm system know that vehicle is not being stolen only that you are trying to reprogram a key. If original master key is not being used then vehicle has to be taken to the GM dealership to program keys and possible key module replacement.

SOURCE: 1997 Grand Prix Key stuck in ignition

A simple way to make your car secure without removing the key is ti run a wire from the positive side of the coil to a good quality toggle switch that you can mount in a discreet location (possibly somewhere easily accessable) then run a wire from the other side of the toggle switch to a metal surface ,and attache the wire with a small sheet metal screw, when you flip the switch to the on position it will ground out the coil thus preventing the engine from starting. Another way is to buy a battery cable with a switch already installed, but that is a real pain to turn on and off as you must open the hood of your vehicle to activate the switch
In my opinion the toggle switch is easy and cheap to do . It creates a theft proof system for very little money or work

Shifter plymouth

Look on the backside of the transmission where the cables attach. If both of them are still connected than they have dislodged at the shifter under the center council. You can have a helper move the shifter while looking at the transmission to see if they move.

Renault 21 transmission shifting

hi Hamish, what you describe is called a 'flaring shift' when revs
don't correlate to vehicle speed due to a slipping auto.
have you rechecked the auto oil level when the engine is running,
sometimes they take a long time to fill because the onboard oil

Key is stuck in ignition

For some reason my 2002 does the same thing. Do you by chance park on an inclined driveway, because we do and setting it in Park with that extra tension may be causing this. If you do park on an incline, as we do, pull in and when you put on the brake keep it down while you set the parking break, so no tension is on the transmission, then move the lever to park. Hope this helps!

Key stuck in ignition

Try Graphite or automatic transmission fluid in the tumbler and if you have access to an air gun see if you can shoot the fluid little by little in the tumbler and pulling out and in while turning left and right should jiggle the key off if not then a lock smith would have a good shot at it before you have to drill it.

Hi, I have a 2006 Volkswaggen Jetta which i think something might be wrong with the transmission. everytime it changes from 2 to 3rd it tries to change but it gets stuck. Once it change it jumps real bad.

Yes, it sounds like you have a transmission that is about to fail and you need to get it into a transmission shop (NOT AAMCO) as soon as you can, or you will walk home very soon.

I have a ford Taurus 1998 V6 and the car is stuck in Park

If you are parked on a steep grade, the pressure on the transmission might make it feel stuck. It might take a lot of pressure to pull the handle out of park.

If that isn't it, try disconnecting the shifter from the transmission, then try to operate it. At least it will show whether the problem is in the transmission or shifter linkage. You DO have the key turned on and foot on brake while trying to get it out of park, don't you?

I have a 96 audi a6 and the key is now stuck in the ignition. Car starts and runs but the key will not come out. Just happened out of the blue...

I would try WD-40, spraying down beside the key with a spray nozzle on the end before I took it to a repair shop or pulled the steering wheel.
