I have to give the car plenty of gas when putting it in gear or it will run smooth when I get up to about 50 mph
Hi......What you mean is that the engine is not idling as it should...Faulty idle can be caused by : vacuum leak: if the brakes are hard as well, check the brake-booster hose for vacuum-leaks.....faulty p.c.v .valve .( positive crank-case ventilation.) replace the p.c.v...its low-priced and easy to replace.....the idle-air-control motor can also be a problem: it may just need cleaning ,or it may be faulty ,the throttle-body may be dirty..... it can easily be cleaned with throttle-body cleaner from an auto-shop.......loose connections in the electrical system......... ,dirty fuel injectors: try some fuel-injector cleaner in the gas........a repair manual for your model is helpful in locating these parts and systems on the engine............good luck...frankiedon
Is the shifter real loose and floppy?
If it is you may be starting out in 3rd gear instead of 1st!
Remove the shifter boot below the shifter look at the rods as you shift 1 thru 5 and Rev! Note the rod position as you shift thru the gears. You can do this while sitting idle, not driving!
If while tring to get it into 1st, take your hand and push the left rod farther forward has you move it into 1st gear! If you are able to get it into 1st, try driving forward, if it doesn't stall, chances are you need to replace the shifter do to the worn out Nylon Bushings in the shifter! If this doesn't help, take a look under the hood and see if the shifter cables are attached to the top of the shifter tower! Some times the clips holding the shifter cable to the trans come off and one of the cables will slide making it impossible to get it into 1st gear!
Hope this helps!
if you need photos of what I'm trying to explain, please reply back as soon as possible.

Pour the fuel injection cleaner to it....sounds like the injectors are dirty.....

I would check your MAF and the IAC. Try cleaning your Mass Air Flow sensor which is in the tube that takes air from the air filter to the throttle body (you will see that it is plugged in). Clean it with some cleaner that says it's safe for a MAF. If it's not that and what I am leaning towards would be your IAC valve. The idle air control valve is located on your throttle body and is normally attached with two screws. I would start with the MAF just because it's cheaper but I'm leaning towards the IAC. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

More than likely a charging issue. Otherwise the cars idle setting has changed (Unlikely) If your alternator is not putting out 13.5-14.5v at idle, your car will indeed stall. If you get this checked at an autoparts store, make sure they test both at the alternator and at the battery, since a bad cable can lead to the same problem with a good alternator. Good Luck
SOURCE: start car and the idle goes to 3000 rpm, holds
it sounds like a vacuum leak to me, my car had the same problem but when i changed the hose that connected the valve cover to the fuel injectors the rpms dropped back down to about 800 rpms
SOURCE: car won't accelerate it will run great at an idle
The catalytic converter is most likely plugged. It can not pass enough exhaust at the higer engine speed
