Disconnect the battery cables because we don't want the car to start while turning the cylinder for removal /this is if you have the key/ put the key in the ignition turn it to the on position on the bottom of the steering column you will see a hole under where the lock cylinder is use a punch or a steel rod that is long enough and thin enough to fit in the hole there is a button inside press that in while rotating and pulling outwards on the cylinder and it will come out then place the new cylinder in until you hear the button click it is now locked in place. / this is if there is no key take the steering column shroud off on the bottom you will see a button sticking out of the column just below the lock cylinder using a drill you must drill out this button all the way this button is what holds the cylinder in the steering column once you have done this insert a flat bladed screw driver into the cylinder and turn it the cylinder should come out good luck to all who use this thread for help STEPHEN

I have a 2004 Alero Oldsmobile if I buy the chipped ignition does it reprogram itself for the anti-theft device

Chipped ignition ? Key's on your car do not have transponder chip . Replacing Keys
The ignition lock cylinder and keys do not contain any coded electronic components. The lock cylinder housing contains the coded electronic components. Changing an ignition lock cylinder or replacing a key is a purely mechanical process which does not affect the vehicle theft deterrent system. To replace an existing key, simply cut a new key to match the existing one. If no keys are available, the lock cylinder must be changed. To change the lock cylinder, simply replace the existing lock cylinder with one of the same type.

12.2. Locate the surface for the ignition switch lock cylinder release button (2) on the plastic ignition switch housing and center punch a location (1) on the "rib" approximately 3/8 inch reward (toward the key entry end) from the cylinder release button.

12.3. Carefully drill a hole through the plastic housing with a 1/8 inch drill bit.

12.4. Carefully drill a larger hole at the pilot location, and slightly into the ignition switch lock cylinder surface to break the release button retaining spring using a 9/32 inch drill bit.

12.5. Remove portions of the broken spring from the hole using a small suitable tool.

Remove ignition lock to switch link 1995 suburban

The ignition lock assembly contains two components: a lock cylinder to deter theft and an electrical portion that supplies power to electrical components such as the radio, electric windows, and windshield wipers. The electrical portion of the ignition switch also provides power to the starter motor to start the engine.
The ignition lock is an anti-theft device that prevents a vehicle from being driven unless the ignition key is in the ignition switch. If the ignition key is not in the ignition switch, it 's impossible to turn the steering wheel.
To replace the ignition switch cylinder lock, the trim panels around the steering wheel are removed. Then the tamper-proof hardware that attaches the ignition lock assembly to the steering column is removed. The ignition lock assembly is removed from the steering column, and the lock cylinder is replaced. The new ignition lock is reattached to the steering column, and the trim panels are replaced.make sure you dissconect battery first the 1997 had a recall on the ignition switch dont no if the 1995 had a recall if so they will replace for free
