Same here and still going wild havent you noticed it only does this when the weather is hot, am not sure but i think its the printed circuit board that causes the problem it expand on hot weather and contracts on cold weather, i have tried taking the whole assembly and cleaning it, it did last a few months and back to being crazy again. also considered replacing, cannot find a new one

You will need to remove the cluster assembly and send it out to a Ford approved instrument cluster repair center to be rebuilt, it is a computer module in reality. there are many on the internet. There is not home fix.

Driving home last night, the temperature guage fluctuated wildly between mid-range, max then back to mid. Fan came on for a long time once the car had stopped. I topped up the coolant as this was low but...

Sounds like fan belt is slipping. When it slips waterpump doesn't spin fast enough to circulate coolant. Also if there's an air pocket in cooling system it'll give similar symptoms.

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport that the AC was not working. Given the most likely cause was low refrigerant I picked some up and when I went to put it in I got a surprise. The gauge on the refrigerant was...

what type of guage were you using. the low pressure cant take up to 100 psi... it would have burst if it had gotten that high. I have seen this happen before. It sounds like the high presure filter is bad or the dryer is bad. If you can do the work yourself its not that expensive.

It very likely may be your alternator. I had the same problem. I took it to the dealership three times and the technicians were stumped as well. Finally, I found this article that talks about it, which led them to change the alternator:
