Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. I am going to be brief. Car is a 2001 it is now 2010 and I would bet the timing belt has not been changed at the recommened 50,000 mile interval. The symptom you described above is spot on for a the inprocess and final failure of an old timing belt

I.e this is it... :"went sluggish then stalled now it won't start when you turn the key it just sounds like something is spinning other than that there is nothing there."

The timing belt broke.
