Yes, the neutral safety switch prevents the engine to be started except in park or Neutral. When the switch is faulty, it will not start anymore in any position.

The switch is on the transmission..It is usually a dealer item but you can get one from Rockauto.com for about 1/4 of what the dealers charge.

SOURCE: neutral safety switch

I would recommend going to the autozone.com website and registering the vehicle. It doesn't cost anything and will give you access to an online repair manual for the vehicle. The steps for replacing the neutral safety switch can be found there. (I checked). Hope this helped and best wishes.

SOURCE: When I turn the key in the ignition I don't hear

no. the noise you're not hearing is the fuel pump. When u turn ur key on you should hear a buzzing like sound from the rear of the vehicle. If not, and ur car don' start, probably fuel pump. Just to verify the faulty fuel pump, have an assistant open the fuel tank cover and remove the gas cap itself. With you inside turn just the key on, and have your assistant listen for the "buzzing" or "hummin" sound. if nothing there, then faulty fuel pump. If noise is present, then perhaps you have a different problem like nothing is reaching the engine, fuel wise. Like a plugged fuel filter. when replacing the fuel pump, ALWAYS do the new strainer as installing the old one could cause a whole new set of problems and eventually wipe out the new one as well *RULE OF THUMB, WITH NEW FUEL PUMP, REPLACE FUEL FITLER.* this will be easier on the pump output to the engine. good luck.!

SOURCE: my neutral safety switch is

Your N/S/S is on the passenger side of the transmission directly opposite from where the linkage on the drivers side connects (it's on the same shaft). It is usually corroded onto the shaft and you will need to use lots of wd40 or other solvent and some patience in getting it free. It's plastic and if you pry hard you will break it. The harness is connected up on the firewall near the dipstick tube. Instructions for removal can be found in chiltons or haynes manuals. The switch itself is over $200 new so you may want to find one in a scrapyard or if you are careful (there are small contacts inside with springs) you can take it apart and clean it up.

I have a Odyssey 2005, been running great, now it won't turn on, Next to D it shows D3 does this have anything to do with turning on

Hello. It seems your Honda's neutral safety switch is, somewhat, 'out of range'. D3 is a gear just below D (DRIVE). Either your Odyssey has a 'faulty' PCM or neutral safety switch. A faulty neutral safety switch won't allow the engine to be started, (normally). Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

Starter will not engage and spin without jumping the starter solenoid

If turning the key does not activate the starter, there are a few reasons this can occur. Since you can get the starter to activate by jumpering, you have ruled out the starter as a candidate. The other things that can cause this are:
  • Faulty clutch safety switch (manual trans)
  • Fault park/neutral safety switch (auto trans)
  • Faulty ignition switch
  • Faulty ignition relay (some cars)
  • Faulty ECM (some cars)
Since you are not telling us what year/make/model/engine size/transmission type of car you have, I can only give you a generalized list of items that could be defective. If I had the additional info, I could rule out some items and perhaps add a few more.

Netural safety switch

Daewoo cars have track record for dependability in addition to solid construction. The most important part of a car's design is the safety features. Circumvent excessive risk while motoring by insuring that your car has the safety gear that you want. A vehicle's Neutral Safety Switch is located on your clutch in the case that it's a manual transmission, and on the shifter in an automatic. A broken Neutral Safety Switch can cause your vehicle to suddenly start in gear, causing vehicle damage or personal injury.

If you don't have the Neutral Safety Switch, your vehicle will fail to work. The Neutral Safety Switch is typically situated below the clutch of trucks which have a stick-shift transmission. The primary function of a Neutral Safety Switch is to stop your truck from starting when in gear. The car's Neutral Safety Switch acts as a safety feature, keeping you from starting the engine if the car is in gear. The Neutral Safety Switch is an electronic part which is essential while starting your car. Here's a link to what it look's like.

Bronco wont start 88 ford bronco just replaced tranny and now won't start. i've hooked everything back up but one of the wires to the transfer case bc i broke the plug in. any ideas why it wont start...

The neutral safety switch is located on the side of the transmission and it is usually attached behind the shifter linkage and it is secured with two small bolts that can be loosened up to allow for adjustment of the neutral safety switch.

To adjust the neutral safety switch place the transmission into neutral, (block the tires) there is a notch or and indent marker on the housing of the neutral safety switch that should be lined up with a line on the face of the collar that is around the shifter detent shaft, and if they are not in alignment then loosen the two bolts that secure the neutral safety switch and then turn the neutral safety switch until they are aligned and then tighten the securing bolts to the neutral safety switch, and then test the starter. If the starter fails to engage then either the neutral safety switch is faulty, the neutral safety switch has been by-passed all this time and the by-pass (I will usually find things like a paper clip shoved into the vehicles wire connector with electrical tape around it) has fallen out of the wire connector from the vehicle wiring harness, or the battery just went dead. if you have the neutral safety switch from the old transmission still available try using it to test the neutral safety circuit. I have provided you with an image to help assist you adjust the neutral safety switch.

1996 mitsubishi eclipse doesn't start when turning the key. had the starter tested, it was good. all the dash lights come on like normal, but nothing happens. Battery is good and fully charged. Any ideas.

check for voltage at the small start wire on the starter when cranking the engine--you will need someone help. If there is no voltage you may have a bad neutral safety switch ,which is on the trany shifter.you have an automatic trans i assume.
If so try putting in neutral when cranking.

Car won't turn over. battery has life, but won't start.

Possible causes include a weak battery; corroded battery terminals; faulty neutral safety switch (this won't allow the car to start in any position other than P or N (if this car is an automatic.)

I had this same vehicle several years ago, with the exact same sypmtpoms, and I could not figure it out-- it was the neutral switch!

Let me know what you figure out!
