Replaced starter on 2002 Nissan Xterra. When I placed the ground wire on the battery, the truck tried to start without the keys in it

Hey! If your 2002 Nissan Xterra attempted to start without the keys in the ignition after replacing the starter, there may be an issue with the electrical system or the starter installation. Here are a few things you can check:
  1. Wiring connections: Double-check the wiring connections on the starter. Ensure that the positive and negative cables are securely attached to the appropriate terminals on the starter. Make sure there are no loose or exposed wires.
  2. Starter solenoid: The starter solenoid is responsible for engaging the starter motor when the ignition key is turned. It's possible that the solenoid is malfunctioning or wired incorrectly. Check the solenoid connections and wiring to ensure they are properly connected and in the correct configuration.
  3. Ignition switch: It's unusual for a vehicle to attempt to start without the keys in the ignition. There could be an issue with the ignition switch or the wiring related to the ignition system. Inspect the ignition switch and its wiring for any signs of damage or loose connections.
  4. Security system: Some vehicles have a security system that can prevent unauthorized starting. If your Xterra is equipped with a security system, ensure that it is not causing the issue. Refer to the vehicle's manual or contact a Nissan dealership for instructions on troubleshooting the security system.
  5. Starter replacement: If all the wiring connections and components appear to be in order, it's possible that the replacement starter is faulty or incompatible with your vehicle. Consider double-checking the specifications of the new starter to ensure it is the correct model for your Xterra.
If you are unsure or uncomfortable with performing these checks yourself, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic or contact a Nissan dealership for assistance. They will have the expertise and tools necessary to diagnose and resolve the issue with your Xterra's starting system.

Where is the starter relay switch in a 1996 oldsmobile

  1. Locate the relay panel: The relay panel is usually located near the battery and is often marked with a diagram of the various relays.
  2. Identify the starter relay: The starter relay is typically marked with an "S" or "ST" on the panel or cover.
  3. Check the wiring diagram: If you're having trouble locating the starter relay, refer to the vehicle's wiring diagram for help.
If you're still unable to locate the starter relay, it's recommended to consult a repair manual

My 2003 navigator no crank no start all lights come on in dash everything works jus want crank no start.

Do you know what's involved in making a starter engage an spin the engine over ? Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? Looking at a wiring diagram an using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter to test the starter electrical circuits is how to find the problem . Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. Year , make , model an engine . Under system click on engine then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue link. Looking at the diagram i see a few componets that could fail an cause a no crank condition . Testing to see if B+ voltage get's down to the solenoid S terminal on the starter ,using a test lamp , DVOM while someone try's to crank the engine would be a good test . Or at the starter relay ,do you know about automotive relay's an how there work . The only problem with this on your vehicle is the location of the relay . Behind the right or left kick panel inside the vehicle .
Here is a video on how a relay works . The only difference on your vehicle ,pin #85 goes to the PCM . On the video it goes to the horn switch . The PCM will supply a ground to pin #85 if no anti-theft system problems exsist .

1999 Chevy Express not starting. Van does not turn over. Accessories work fine. No drain on lights when attempting to start. Where is the Neutral Safety Switch? And what side of vehicle is starter mounted?...

You can test right from the starter relay ,located in the under hood fuse relay box . You want to know if the starter is good or bad or if the control side is the problem . Turning the ignition switch to start sends B+ voltage to the park neutral safety switch an through the coil side of the starter relay to ground ,if the park neutral switch is good . Try moving the gear selector into neutral to see if it starts then .
Looking at a wiring diagram would be a good first step in the diagnostic process. Free wiring diagram's here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info year , make , model and engine size . Under system click on engine then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue link . Pull the relay an look at the bottom , you will see four numbers . 30 - 87 & 85 - 86 . Take a piece of 12 gage wire ,jump where 30 an 87 plug into the relay socket . If the starter is it will spin the engine over .
