My starter went out in my 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette. I replace it with a brand new starter, without key in ignition the starter was winding as soon as I reconnected the battery. However, while doing this it would not kick in and out. I tested the new starter and it was healthy. No matter what I have tried it just keeps having a constant instead of the ignition wires cancelling it out until I turn my key. The van does have a remote starter as well. Please help!

I think that you have a defective starter solenoid, this the part that is mounted to the top of the starter.

That sounds like it could be the body computer. Not that this rules out the ignition but diagnose to be sure so you are not wasting money.

Because the ignition switch wire (small purple wire) or connector is touching the hot post on the starter.So when you connect the battery it just like turning the ignition key to start the engine. Make sure all the wires on the starter are not touching each other.

First, check the battery connections to be sure they are tight and clean.
This could be tough because it is intermittent. If the car stopped while running, this helps, because it suggests the problem is in the ignition circuit rather than the starter circuit. Could be ignition switch, or any of the wiring related. I have had this happen twice and it was a failing ignition switch. But also check the relays in the ignition circuit - these are easier to replace.

Sounds like time for a new starter. While it could be electrical, in that the starter circuit is remaining engaged, more than likely it is mechanical. As the starter wears, you get play in the starter gear. Replacing the starter should take care of it. If you have recently had the starter off or replaced it, it could be misaligned, causing a similar problem.

I have the same issue with my 2002 Silhouette mini van! As soon as the weather got warmer, issues starting- did you get any answers???

If the car is automatic transmission its probably the inhibitor switch on the gearbox faulty.

over time our starters get a flat spot on them from wear. Or the solenoid is starting to go out. The solenoid is an electric switch that mounts on the starter. In my opinion its your starter....
