SOURCE: where are the timing marks on a 2000 gmc jimmy to

look in front of motor, down to where harmonic balancer is on the front of motor, should be a timing tab on timing chain cover, pull no1 plug out, hold finger on the spark plug hole or put a rag in the hole just enough to get it to blow out, bump motor over a little at a time when the no 1 piston comes up on compression stoke, it will blow rag out of hole, or it will blow out around your finger, you might have to put wrench on balancer to turn motor a little, stick screw driver in hole to see if piston is high as it will go, pull distributator cap, see if rotor button is pointing to number one plug wire on the cap, also check balancer to see if any marks are showing, somewhere on the tab on timing chain cover, if so should be in time or close, you may have to put timing light on it

What are the timing marks on the crank

The timing marks, when aligned is when the #1 piston is on top dead center. They are on the harmonic balancer and the tab is bolted or welded to the timing cover.

Which timing mark on the harmonic balencer for a 4.3 vortech do you use for top dead center and positioning the rotor on the six casted into the distributer housing

the harmonic balancer has just one big mark closest to timing cover, , you degree indacater or timing mark on timing cover is the center that is TDC when you drop your distributer in have the rotor on and when you put cap over it the wire that it points to should be # 1 cylinder and start your firing order from that point. if you get lost in this go to auto zone library for more info.

How do you set TDC?

Yes, there's timing marks on all engines. You'll find a mark on the harmonic balancer that the pullys bolt to on crankshaft. Other mark is on a tab bolted to the engine to one side of the balancer. There's a TDC mark stamped into this tab for Top Dead Center of the #1 cylinder. Place these to marks in alignment and your there.

How TDC related to timing

TDC stands for 'Top Dead Center', and refers to the first piston and the harmonic balancer: with the spark plug removed in the first firing cylinder, you turn the harmonic balancer till it tops out (the piston-you can use the eraser end of a pencil, sticking it down till you feel it hit) when accomplished you set your mark and that is your TDC now you adjust with a timing gun/light using that mark. This is always nessecary when engine has been changed, altered or rebuilt, because stock specs no longer apply. . .

Replace timing chain

remove radiator and hoses, remove enough accessory brackets to get to water pump, remove waterpump & harmonic balancer, take timing cover loose, loosen oil pan bolts(take about the first 3-4 completely out and loosen the rest), reinstall harmonic balancer bolt and line up timing marks. cylinder #1 at top dead center and valves for cylinder #1 closed. remove harmonic balancer bolt and remove cam gear bolts and crankshaft gear, install is reverse order..

Trying to find timing marks for 1995 Toyota Corolla 7a-fe

the timing marks are on the timing cover just above the crankshaft pulley(harmonic balancer)and can be seen with a light either forward or rearward of the top of the pulley.the mark on the pulley is usually just a slot(groove) cut into the pulley that you line up with the marks on the timing cover showing the degrees of timing, note there is before top dead center and after top dead center timing marks shown and the marks that you use is before top dead center.

Want to know how to set motor up for top dead centre on number1 to replace distributor

There is a timing mark on the timing chain cover. Some have a little tube. The bottom center of the engine where the crank shaft is there is a harmonic balancer. The balancer has a line on it. Get the line right on the 0 degrees mark. This will be top dead center.

Please rate by clicking one of the 4 thumbs ups depending on how much I helped! Thanks!

1991 olds bravada timing question

I have a 1996 Olds Bravada with a 4.3L Vortec 6. The two grooved notches on the harmonic balancer are not used in timing as far as I can tell. Look for a small peg on the back of the harmonic balancer, and once found, you will be able to see it and line it up with the "v" marks on the timing cover. Keep in mind this is on the 1996, but I thought it might be the same since I had a similar problem of trying to figure out which marks to use until I found the peg. You should be able to feel it also.
