Timing chain or belt? Almost all timing gears have a dot that face each other when the timing marks are lined up. If you are not carful you can damage the valves while rotating the crank and came to the lined up position. However in a perfect world the top gear can be removed when it is lined up, and reinstalled with the chain or belt in place, it will be tight but you should not need to force it. good luck

2004 Ford Focus ZX5 - car skips beats/rhythm while idling. Random w/ no set pattern.

can be a few ideas: check plug wires, misfiring, check the plug, if you dont have plugs, than check the [ where the plug should be]
it could be the timing belt slipping, in the 1970 we had timing chains that would last for every, but some one got idea is to put a belt in so at 60-70 thousand miles you need to replace timing belt.

This unit will be running a timing chain. Now,The 1.6 "diesel" engine has both a belt and chain. In the diesel edition, the belt runs from the crank shaft to the cam and the other cam is ran by the chain.

2005 Ford Focus L4-2.0L VIN N Hello your vehicle has a timing chain, you do not have to replace it ever... It was designed to last the life of the vehicle, unless you have a water pump, or a timing pulley or even a timing tensioner go bad, that is when you would service the timing chain. I added what your vehicle needs at it's 90,000mile service below, hope this helps... (subytech1)
