To adjust the shift linkage on your 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 3.9L engine, follow these steps:
Locate the shift linkage on the transmission. It should be near the top of the transmission and will have a rod or cable connected to it.
Look for the adjustment nut or bolt on the linkage. This is typically a threaded rod or bolt that can be turned to adjust the length of the linkage.
Loosen the lock nut on the adjustment bolt, using a wrench.
Move the shift lever on the transmission to the desired position (such as Neutral or Park).
Adjust the linkage by turning the adjustment bolt or rod until the shift lever on the transmission is aligned with the desired position.
Tighten the lock nut on the adjustment bolt, using a wrench.
Test the shift lever on the transmission by moving it through all the gear positions to ensure that it is properly adjusted and working correctly.
If you are unsure about how to adjust the shift linkage, or if you are having difficulty with the process, it may be best to consult a professional mechanic or refer to your vehicle's service manual for detailed instructions.
Is this console shift or column shift? If column shift, I'd have to look under the hood or under the vehicle at the shift linkages to see if the linkages are moving? Is this fwd or rwd, I haven't looked up any info on your vehicle?
If column shift and the shift linkages don't move, the shifter in the column may be broken, if that is the case, I swap out the steering column for one with a good shifter.
I don't know your model year? If the ignition switch is on the steering column, I don't know if it might effect your security system, where applicable? You might be swapping one problem for another, hope not? Something to think about.
Yes, most likely. The linkage needs inspection from the shift lever to the transmission. You may have to check under the vehicle for disconnected linkage AND under the cover of the shift lever inside the truck.
something must be in the way blocking the shifter maybe inside the car something fell into the console or the console was moved or the linkage underneath is bent ? if you can go from 1-2 and have neutral there but can't go further in the shift pattern I suspect what I listed also there could be a broken bushing in the linkage get under it after safely jacking up and put it on stands and inspect all linkage parts for missing or bent parts also look under the console first it easier for an object that's stuck in there ? ( a pen maybe )
Your shifter cables are most likely worn out or stretched out. Adjusting the cables moves the shifter arm a little bit. The turnbuckles for adjusting are inside the center console under the shifter arm. To get to them, you have to take out the center console. One cable controls side to side movement and the other controls front to back, don't adjust the wrong one on accident.
Gday mate, geoff here, now on your shifter if column shift there is an adjustment where it goes down the box from the steering column under the hood and if stick shift should be just under the console, alternitiveley the rubber grommets on the linkage are worn and need replacement, some fuel hose will surfice here if the grommets are unavailable at the parts counter, hope this helped, geoff.
look on the top of your trans have a friend or gf shift the car from gear to gear when nor running look for moving cable if none then time to take the console apart
remember there are also shift linkages on some models so you might ha ve to jack the car up and go under it to find linkage
they are only bolted on under car and in a ball others
Check all your linkage goin from your shift lever to your transmission. You might have messed it up. prolly will have to remove the center console to access it and find where it connects under the hood. look for broken cables or binding linkage.
