Based on the information that has been provided, the first thing I would check would be your transmission fluid level. You need to check your automotive manual to determine the type of transmission fluid to be used, and how to determine if it is low. Many cars have a dip stick towards the back of the motor. My dodge truck has a dip stick with a yellow handle. The dip stick will have a safe mark on it. Most cars have to be running when you check the fluid level. The engine and transmission need to be warm. Some Dodge transmissions need to be in neutral when the fluid level is checked.

The only thing I can say for sure is that you need to consult your manual for how to check the fluid level.

If the fluid level checks out then the transmission will have to be serviced by a shop. It could be hardware failure, or as simple as a clogged transmission filter.

On the manual the fluid is "lifetime" BMW MTF LT-1, SOME models used ATF. There is a plate on the side of the transmission that will give what your particular model was filled with.

On the automatic the fluid type should be printed on the "type plate" on the side of the transmission

both are usually Dexronn III ATF, but please check your plate!!!
