The tumblers in the lock cylinder are stuck and this prevents the key from turning. Spray some lubricant into the cylinder, insert the key in and out numerous times and also hit the end of the key with a rubber hammer while it is in the cylinder and this will help to release the tumblers.
if the steering wheel is in a bind against the lock the key will not turn easily if at all. try rocking the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key. be firm with the wheel, you're not gonna hurt anything. not to much pressure on the key, forcing the key wont help.
Try rocking the steering wheel side to side slightly while turning key. Sometimes these bind in a such a way that it prevents the ignition from turning. This is normal.
sounds like you have a frozen lock cylinder. you can try spraying some wd-40 or lube into the key slot and tapping on the ignition and it might free up temporarily but you will most likely have to replace the lock cylinder
make sure its the right key,if so try a spare key,,key may be worn NAPA has wet grafite spray try that none of thi works ,try shaking steering wheel bac and forth while trying to start it,make sure its in park good and foot is on brake
