What would cause the engine to sputter when idling in gear with the ac on?

I have replaced the alternator and the tps sensor. With each fix the car seamed almost fixed then the problem gets gradually worse.

Hello,
You should use carb cleaner on the Air Intake Idle control motor assembly (that is located on the Intake manifold and held in place with 4 bolts) it is a small motor that adjusts the amount of air reaching the engine when it is at an idle speed such as at a red light or not in gear. The assembly usually gets clogged with gunk that is in the air and oil droplets that somehow are always present. Once cleaned you should experience a smoother running engine. If the problem still exists and the car is running slightly better then perhaps a new motor assembly is needed,.

Good Luck!

Try to remove the ac belt. If the problem goes away, then your ac compressor or ac clutch are going bad. The reason is that every time the ac clutch start up (you can hear the relay click on) the engine would rattle or RPM drop. The ac clutch or compressor taking too much torgue from the crank shaft .

The turbine shaft speed sensor can cause this problem, It is also know as the transmission input shaft speed sensor. It will cause the transmission to **** and also stick in 3rd gear, which wound cause slow acceleration.

That sounds more like lack of fuel pressure due to worn pump, plugged fuel filter, or defective fuel pressure regulator. The engine computer should be read with a rented scanner to determine the area of the trouble. Don't just replace parts until it runs--usually, a very expensive repair process. If the engine uses a rubber timing belt to the cams, the mileage is about right to change it (them) too (as a precaution). Hope this helps!

SOURCE: I have a 98 Hyundai accent. Won't accelerate over 50mph

the o2 sensor will cause overfuelling and an improper throttle position.
the heater circuit has 12v,and the other 2 wires are a reference voltage.
you need to use a scanner and look at the live data to see what the 02 sensor is doing.
after battery disconnect, the monitors have to set using a drive cycle of which you can get from hyundai.Typically to set the 02 heater circuit, the car has to idle for 2 minutes when cold, and then drive at 55mph for 3 minutes with the a/c on.

SOURCE: faulty pedal position sensor

if your pedal is cable operated (not likely) then check the fire wall, just trace the cable. if it is electronic pedal then it is most likely the pedal itself

Your problem is quite possibly a lean idle miss. Check for vacuum leaks. Especially cracked, broken or disconnected vacuum lines.

What happens when throttle position sensor is not working

When the throttle position sensor (TPS) in a 4A30 engine Mini Pajero is not working properly, it can cause several issues. Some possible effects include:
1. Poor engine performance: The TPS provides feedback to the engine control unit (ECU) about the position of the throttle plate. If the TPS is faulty or not working, it may not accurately convey the throttle position information, resulting in incorrect fuel delivery and ignition timing. This can lead to sluggish acceleration, reduced power, and overall poor engine performance.
2. Unstable idle: The TPS plays a crucial role in maintaining a stable idle speed. If it fails, the ECU may not receive the correct signal indicating the throttle position at idle. This can cause the engine to idle erratically, with fluctuating RPMs or even stalling.
3. Transmission shifting issues: In vehicles with automatic transmissions, the TPS is also involved in determining when and how the transmission shifts gears. If the TPS is malfunctioning, it may provide inaccurate data to the ECU, leading to improper shifting patterns or hesitation during gear changes.
4. Check Engine Light (CEL): A faulty TPS can trigger the vehicle's onboard diagnostics system, causing the Check Engine Light to illuminate on the dashboard. This serves as an indicator that there is an issue with the TPS or its associated circuitry.
When experiencing any of these symptoms, it is advisable to have the TPS inspected and, if necessary, replaced by a qualified mechanic or technician familiar with the 4A30 engine in the Mini Pajero.

I have a 1989 ford bronco with a 302 that ideals up and down and dies out when park in red light

A number of things could be the problem here:
  1. Bad plugs - fouled plugs would cause erratic idling
  2. Bad wires - also would cause erratic idling
  3. Bad or worn distributor cap
  4. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  5. Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor - this controls the idling speed under all conditions. A bad TPS would idle fine under certain conditions ie engine cold, engine warm with AC on etc but could be bad when truck is warm and at a stop.

1986 Nissan King Cab pick up. Runs good when giving gas, but cuts off at an idol. Have replaced Altenator.

Based on the information provided, it sounds like a bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). The TPS controls your idling speed under all conditions. When a TPS goes bad, you will usually notice the vehicle will idle when the engine is cold but once warm or with the AC on, it will sputter or stall.

1996 windstar with 3.8L idles fine in park or neutral but if its in gear with a/c on it studders and dies but starts right up again...doesn't seem to do it when the a/c is not on...

The most common cause of your problem is the TPS. The Throttle Position Sensor regulates the idle under all conditions ie cold, warm, AC on. Unfortunately, it's electronic and can't be adjusted, only replaced. Another less likely cause is a loose or worn serpentine belt. This would prevent the alternator from properly replenishing power back to the battery. When the AC is on, it's a bigger draw than normal on your electrical system and could cause stalling. Although it's less likely, it's worth looking into prior to making a more expensive repair such as the TPS. Most chain auto parts stores and some service stations will do a free test on your charging system to ensure your problem isn't electrical.

When a/c is turned on idles rough and rpms drop put in neutral and idles fine in gear rough idle when you come to stop already changed egr valve not the problem

See if the idle control is working. I have a protegee that does the same thing, although the cause of mine is diffrent, it is the torque converter clutch not disengaging when stopped. Read the code, and see if there are any. Auto Zone will read it for free and give you a print out.

IDLE May be too Low

you could have a faulty Tps(throttle position sensor) this is located on the throttle body and has either a 4 wire plug or a 2 wire plug. I'm willing to bet that you need to replace this. the tps is responsible for your idle setting via the ecm(engine control moduel)...please rate this

2002 Yukon XL Denali Problem: When idling, goes below 500 RPMs, spits and sputters at idle. No check engine light, spark plugs are one year old. Could it be a sensor??

Most sensors will trigger the check engine light, however the TPS(throttle position sensor) or EGR Valve(exhuast gas recirculation valve) could be potential causes. Does this problem only occur at idle? Is the idle normal in park? Let me know and I can try to assit further.

Hope this helps
