There are MANY reasons why a car of that age will lose power, not the least of which is engine wear and "blow-by" (a term used to describe the loss of compression past rings and valve seals, usually accompanied by a loss of engine oil).
If your vehicle is burning crankcase oil, or if you remove your oil cap while the car is running and feel air coming out of the oil fill, your engine is really worn and will probably have a hard time going up hills.
Also very common on vehicles of that age is rust in the fuel tank, which will clog the pickup screen (or "fuel sock"), and also clog the fuel filter with rust particles. A good place to start is replacing your fuel filter, and see how much RED is visible. (Any RED you see in what comes out of the input side of your fuel filter is rust from the gas tank.) If you get red gunk out of your old fuel filter, you'll definitely need to clean or replace your fuel tank and replace the fuel sock as well.
Next thing to check is the last time the vehicle had a major tune-up. Was it over five years or 25,000 miles ago? Go ahead and do a major tune-up. (Do all that applies to the engine you have: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, coil packs, throttle body clean, static timing adjust, ODB code clearing, and complete fluid change INCLUDING transmission AND both differentials).
As far as the vehicle "blowing out transmission fluid," I can't answer that at all, not knowing where it's blowing it out from.

Check your ignition timing. Use a timing gun or get a garage to do it, The charge (Fuel & air) is being ignited at the wrong time. When this is set up properly you will also get better mileage and performance.

Change trans fluid and filter. Sounds like filter is starting to clog up. Trans fluid & filter should be done every 30k. More often if you do alot of heavy towing

1993 chevy 4x4 auto trans shifts hard 1st to 2nd

check fluid level AND condition...should a red color...if its discolored, in any way, flush it and change the filter too...then perhaps there is a band that is out of adjustment allowing the flare up, and it suddenly grabs getting the hard shift....or else trans is worn out....check the fluid

Not shfiting right

eric sounds like you have a electronic trans mission or computer controled trans.is the check engine light on ?

second it sounds like your trans is in limp in mode ( only has second gear).

the hard shifts is not good news.

somtimes when the controller sets a code that forces limp in it has to be cleared.

dis-connect the battery for a few min. then try it again see if it shifts but be easy on it and make sure fluid level is good.

if it it still messes up CHA CHING hehe i'll fix it fer 1000 bucks

1988 Chevy Suburban transmission

bad design flaw with the transmission kick down cable make sure you are in OD first but if you are then this cable is adjustable it is next to the throttle cable and tells the trans when to downshift only adjust very little increments as this can easily blow your tanni as you may already know this feeling
