SOURCE: 1993 ford escort not starting/is stalling

Someone told you wrong. The firing order is 1-3-4-2
That is for both the 1.8 Liter engine, and the 1.9 Liter engine.
If you have the 1.8 Liter engine with the distributor:
Looking at a top view, (Looking straight down from the top), view the mounting screws for the distributor cap. View the screws in a straight line, top to bottom. The adjustment to turn the distributor is on the left. The connection for the wiring harness is on the right.

Number 1 spark plug tower is on top. It is in-between the upper mounting screw, and the connection for the wiring harness.
Rotation for the distributor is Counterclockwise. To the left. 1-3-4-2

Viewing the Escort from the front, looking at the windshield. Number 1 spark plug is all the way to the right. The distributor is on the left.
Right to left it is 1-2-3-4.

To diagnose why your car won't stay running, is tough without more information. Could be something as simple, as needing a tune-up real bad.
Start with the Fuel System, then go to the Engine Electrical System. If you get your car running again, and find more information, how about coming back here, and asking again?
Post another question with perhaps a little more info?

SOURCE: 1993 Ford Escort Automatic Shoulder Harness

To access the passive restraint cable, cable guide and motor, remove the upper plastic cover across the door by pulling it straight out, then remove the rear lower interior panel in the same fashion, the seatbelt system is now exposed, it is held to the car by 10 mm bolts and some phillips head screws, and a large torx bolt at the bottom behind the motor in lower section. Most of these systems fail due to the cable breaking, it is difficult to replace, the entire system can be replaced with another one from a salvaged vehicle, or new from the dealer, however the new from dealer is about $500 dollars. Hope this helps.
