SOURCE: how do you clean the egr valve on 99 pontiac montana

You would need to remove it and look into the passage that is covered in black soot. there is usually a little poppet that moves up and down to allow the exhaust gas to pass thru it, some are vacuum operated and some are electric. you can push the poppet open and scrape out the carbon with a little screw driver, generally they dont get all that pluged up on newer cars. I looked at a picture of yours at auto zone.com It appears yours is electrically actuated. If either the electric actuator or the position feedback in the valve are bad you would need to replace it. You could attempt to clean it and move the poppet up and down it could just be stuck

SOURCE: Does anyone have engine schematics for a 2003

If you don't know where the EGR Valve is located, it is safe to assume that you did not properly diagnose your EGR system...how do you know the valve needs replacing?

If you are trying to fix a trouble code P0401 " Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Insufficient Flow" (This is a very common code with 3.1L GM Engines)
An EGR Valve replacement will most likely make you about $125 poorer than you were before and will not fix the problem.

Your EGR port into the intake manifold is most likely clogged up and needs to be cleaned out.

You will need a Throttle Body Gasket, an EGR Gasket, a can of ThrottleBody and Intake Cleaner, and a little antifreeze. (You will lose just a little when you remove the throttle body.)

d859ab3.gif
Remove the EGR Valve and the Throttle Body. Use a screw driver or pick to chip out the carbon buildup in the EGR port going into the intake manifold. You will probably have to work it from the intake side as well as the EGR side to get as much of the black carbon out as possible. Be careful not to let this stuff go down into the intake plenum - you will burn some valves if it gets in there. Then use the Throttle Body and Intake cleaner to finish the cleanup. (It helps to take a rag and stuff it into the intake manifold just past the EGR port to catch the gunk so it doesn't go down into the plenum...just don't forget to remove the rag before putting the Throttle Body back on)

Put everything back together and top-off your antifreeze and clear your computer codes. That should fix it.

Where is the egr solenoid located

EGR vacuum solenoid is located below your EGR valve. Center your self on the engine, look between the rear of the engine and your firewall. You can see your the top of you EGR valve, there will be a small vacuum hose connected to the top. Follow that small hose straight down from your EGR valve and it connects to the solenoid. You can see the solenoid better from beneath the car. May have an orange connector. Hope this helps.

Erg flow insufficient

  • The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum
It is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
  • Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
  • Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
  • Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
  • Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
  • Replace the EGR valve
The EGR valve is located in the engine compartment. Its should look this

Where is the egr valve on a 2005 dodge 1500 5.7L

The electronic EGR valve and solenoid assembly (3) is attached to the front of the right cylinder head (1). An exhaust gas routing tube connects the EGR valve to the intake manifold.

2efe0f8.gif

Disconnect electrical connector (1) from EGR solenoid (2). Remove two bolts (3) connecting EGR tube (4) to valve assembly. Remove gasket located between EGR tube flange and EGR valve assembly.

Remove two mounting bolts (2). Separate valve assembly (3) from cylinder head (1). Remove and discard metal gasket located between cylinder head and valve assembly.
The new EGR valve will come with a new metal gasket. You can reuse the smaller gasket for the metal pipe going to the egr valve as long as its not damaged.

TY for using Fixya; remember rated this post.

EGR VALVE ON 96 FORD PROBE SE

If it's a 2.0L, 5 speed (1994-7) there are two DPFE solenoids (both w/ 3 vacuum ports) near the oil filter, which control the EGR valve. They are discontinued and impossible to find except on junked cars. (FORD #'s K5T44093-4)
I have to junk my 1996 Probe if I don't find them - Missouri emissions.
