Remove the plug cable from the plug then hold it close to the engine head or engine block a spark should jump a quarter inch or more . while a helper works the starter.

Remove a plug , the one with the longest ht lead would be best , once removed plug the ht lead back on to plug and rest plug against the engine block , DO NOT hold onto the plug during this next stage , get someone to turn the engine over whilst you look at the spark plug to see if there is a spark

I'm replacing a water pump on my 1990 BMW 525i and I don't no how to remove that thing where the spark plugs go and the rotor 2nd I'm also need to remove the timing belt cover can I get the 3rd bolt out...

STOP what you are doing before you damage something!! Whatever you are trying to remove is not the water pump. Neither the sparkplugs nor the "timing belt" cover needs to come off. Remove the fan belt. Remove the fan (the nut is LH thread- means it turns left to tighten and right to loosen). You will need a large wrench (32mm) availible at sears. The water pump is directly behind the fan and is held in by 4 10mm bolts.

Next time it is in the no start mode pull a plug and check for spark while cranking. You need to determine if it is a spark problem or fuel problem before you can go any further
