My Mazda Verisa overheat after the coolant cap was left loose. Now it shows check engine even after replacing coolant and temperatures back to normal What could have been damaged causing this check engine illumination?
Hi Anonymous,
It probably depends how far you drove after the car overheated. It is extremely bad news to drive an overheated car.
Typically the head gasket (between the cylinder head and the engine block) will warp when the coolant goes dry and the engine overheats. And then it leaks - both on the outside of the engine block and with big white smoke out the tailpipe.
Replacing the head gasket is doable but expensive.
But if you don't see any leaks on the block or white smoke you may have dodged a bullet.
Hope this helps,
Bud

your fan is the problem...it's not turning fast enough to cool the engine off. I need more info on what type of fan you have....elec fan or a clutch fan?
did the car over heat for long?
there could possibly be damage to your head like warping due to overheating and blowing a head gasket or something along those lines .
first check the oil dipstick is it milky?
then check the coolant is it oily?
and when it is running is it blowing any white smoke?
if you replaced the plugs and it is misfiring did you plug the wire all the way back on the plugs if not then the problem is a plug wire being loose and loosing connection with the plug.
sounds like a simple fix if you don't have water in your oil or white smoke coming out the exhaust.
troubleshooting it can be a bigger job but if you nail the right symptoms down you can corner the problem.
like if it is a coil pack or bad wire switch them with another one and see if the problem follows the wire or coil pack.for instance take the number one plug wire off and the number two wire off and put the number one wire on number two and see if the number one misfires. if so then the wire is the problem if not then try numbers three and four until you find out which cylinder is the culprit.
good luck and happy hunting.
SOURCE: Head gasket is damaged. 2005 Nissan Sentra, 1.8
i have a 2005 1.8 nissan sentra.i rplaced the radiator becuause it was leaking.so when i did i took it for a test drive and the needle went to hot then back down to middle ways between the C & H BACK IN FORTH.so i replaced the thermostat. now as far as i can tell it is staying in the middle of C & H. i can't feel no water though cerulating through the top or bottom hose of the radiator. so now that i told you what i done so far my question is???? ( my heater is not working in the car it is blowing out cold air & i left the car runnng for about 45 min. even took it up and down the road.still cold air.what do you think i need to do?????????? )
It is not causing any damage and will likely not leave you stranded however it will be hitting you in the pocket book.
A cooler running engine will require more fuel to keep running. Also if the engine temp does not get up to full operating temp the PCM may not enter closed loop which mean it will be running on preprogrammed conditions rather than on sensor data which will also use more fuel and may cause some performance issues.
A new thermostat is the normal fix for this problem. $10-$20 for a stat and an hour to replace with basic hand tools and you should be good to go.
If your not a do it yourselfer you should be able to get this done for under a couple hundred dollars maybe a little more if you need a coolant flush.
