You're saying it will crank but won't turn over? Be aware that with the key in the 'on' position, the pump only runs for about 2 seconds until pressure is reached. Then it'll run while cranking as fuel line pressure drops since injectors are spraying fuel into intake manifold which causes fuel pressure to drop. If you suspect you are not getting fuel delivered to cylinders, check the fuel pressure regulator. It could be allowing fuel to return to tank and never pressurizing fuel supply line, so that injectors are firing blanks.

So, your saying that the vehicle/engine will start but then shuts off due to fuel pump not continuing to pump fuel? If so, check fuses & fuel pump relay to make sure it's all good. If all that is good, make sure you are getting power to the fuse & relay with key in on position.

You should always have power to both with key in on position, fuel pump relay has a diagram on it of how it works. If you are not getting power to either one with key on, then you can pull up the fuse/relay center under the hood and trace down the power wire. Make sure you know what you are doing, you ONLY want to identify the power wire that comes from the fuse and then jumps to the relay.

The relay turns power on & off to the fuel pump as directed by ignition switch, engine computer(PCM). You may need a wiring schematic of the fuel pump system to track down this issue. If the relay is not getting power from the fuse then you can cut the old wire, (dead leg it), but make sure you secure it! Then just simply jump from another power source, but ALWAYS install a fuse-able link! And, use the SAME size amp fuse as the manufacturer recommended/used! Make sure if you do this that the power source you use is only hot with key on! Hope this helps

You know that how?

What testing told you that?

I would only be guessing (that is all we do here)

But it sounds as though the ignition switch is worn
& effects the fuel pump circuit, when in the on position, maybe!

Get yourself a wiring diagram & see how the system should work,
then test it at different points that are accessible

1997 infiniti j30 won't start

An engine that will crank but not start can be tricky to diagnose. First, we can rule out the battery, starter and circuits in-between due to the cranking condition. The three areas to focus our attention on are compression, spark and fuel. Generally speaking, a compression gauge should show each cylinder at above 100 PSI for an engine to run. Low compression would have to be present across all cylinders (or at least one bank on a v-shaped engine) to generate a no-start condition which would be indicative of a timing belt or other mechanical issue. Next, a spark tester should show ignition spark present while the engine is cranking. With a coil-on-plug (COP) setup it would be inconceivable for all six plugs or coils to fail simultaneously, therefore if spark is not present it would point to a crankshaft position sensor (CKP) or other control-side issue. Lastly, there is the fuel system which is two-fold; fuel supply and fuel delivery. Fuel supply is the fuel pump which takes fuel from the tank and supplies it to the fuel rail at the engine. The fuel pump should prime (turn on for a few seconds) when the key is cycled on. Fuel pressure can be checked at the fuel rail for proper operation or alternatively a flammable aerosol such as starting fluid can be sprayed into the intake while cranking to see if the engine runs. Fuel delivery on the other hand consists of the fuel injectors which must be modulated. Much like the ignition coils it is not likely to have six injectors fail at once, therefore if fuel is not injecting into the intake it would point to a camshaft position sensor (CMP) or other control-side issue. Fuel pump wont come on

ok, you never said how you know that>?
1: pressure zero
2: crack fitting dribble tests?
3: cant hear it ( i cant either cranking,)
some cars about 1/2 only run the jump cranking and running.
not just key on. (FSM is the only book that answers this tricky question)
some cars have ECU flash updates that change this rule.
so read the TSB on that..

why not post the symptoms so pros can answer.....?????

1: cranks ok
2: no start.
3: spark is good and compression all good, on all cylinders
if compression is low on all , the timing belt fell off, and BOOM !

4: spark good, you try test fuel.
a: runs for 3 seconds, suspect no injection.
b: dont run, at all bad that, check compression at WOT on all cyl.

suspect bad injection;
A: check pressure cranking, (no key on, but cranking)
i get 30psi, its good.
i get 5 psi or 0 , bad pump or now 12vdc to pump cranking.
B: pump at 30pis cranking
so i run a NOID lamp test on all injectors,
it fails... (ask for how to go past here...... longer story....

more complex than you though , huh?

1989 cutlas cera wont start its giving me code 12

Code 12 is a "good" code-it means system normal.
Since no codes are stored, check for spark and check for gas-is the fuel pump coming on? You should hear the pump buzz for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to on-it should start and pressurize the lines, then shut off until the engine is cranked-when cranking, pump should be running again. If you don't hear the pump, check if the fuel pump wire at the gas tank connector has power to it when the engine is cranking. If it does and the pump is not working, the pump will need replacing.
If no power, check the fuel pump fuse and relay, under the hood.
If the fuel pump is working, it may be ignition related-check for spark. You need to see a blue snapping spark to know the ignition system is good. If no spark, suspect the ignition control module or the crank position sensor -or the pickup coil, if no crank sensor. The pickup coil will be in the distributor-if you have one. If no distributor, crank position sensor is behind the crankshaft harmonic balancer.
If fuel pump and spark are good, you will need to diagnose the injector circuit.
Post back with what you find.

I have a 2003 Chevy cavalier that will not start or even try. It cranks fine, I have verified it has spark, I replaced the plugs and crank shaft position sensor, timing chain is intact, but I didn't...

you may need to check the compression. if the plugs have fuel on them and you know the spark is good then the only thing missing for the car to run is the compression. if all the cylinders have low compression then the car has jumped time most likely.

Continues cranking. Wont turn over. what s my next step?

You mean it cranks but wont start (cranking and turning over are the same thing) When cranking, rap on the fuel tank, if it then runs, the pump is bad and will need to be replaced.

97 Tarus wont start

recheck spark by putting a plug into one of the plug wires and place on valve cover, crank engine and see saprk in that plug. check fuel pressure during cranking to verify fuel supply. If you have no fuel pressure check fuses and fuel pump relay, in fuse box and power distribution box under the hood. If all are good check for power at the fuel pump connector with the key in start position, in run position the power will only be there for about 5 seconds, you are correct with fuel and spark it should run, let me know what you find
